THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY 30, 1929 THESE SMALL AMBASSADORS OF OURS .... TE carrier service of The Oshawa Daily Times, then The Ontario Reformer, was established in 1920 with a carrier staff of 17. Today, in Oshawa alone, 60 boys distribute The Times - while in Whitby, 3owmanville, Pickering, Port Perry and Brooklin, another 15 take care of their particular distribution. Boys of the highest character and intelligence are chosen to distribute The Times. They are, in many cases, our only point of personal contact with our subscribers. It behooves us to excercise keen discrimination in selecting our representatives. - Each carrier boy earns on an average $150 per year. This sub-, substantial sum is, in most cases, put to good use. Many of our boys are providing for themselves a fund sufficient to put them . through college. The wise use of their earnings is encouraged by us, as we realize that these fine young Canadians will be the citizens of tomorrow. - Our boys like their jobs. Many of our carriers have been with us for years, One of our boys has been steadily employed by us for 5 years and in that time he has made an enviable record aura Group photograph of part of our Oshawa carrier personnel. A splendid selection of healthy, happy and intelligent Canadian Boyhood.--~Photo by Campbell. T in the Public and High Schools. The work of these boys seems to sharpen their mental faculties-they stand high in scholastic attainments as well as in the more strenuous field of physical activities. Membership on The Times Carrier Staff is a jealously prized possession. It is not unusual for a younger brother to take over the route of an older when the latter's school work becomes too heavy to permit him carrying on with his route. ) There is an atmosphere of "Camaraderie" among the members of our carrier staff which finds expression in many joyous social occasions throughout the year. A banquet is given the staff each year at which prominent men are often present. An occasional theatre party, picnic or other event is enjoyed during' each year. The members of the Carrier Staff are not regarded solely as de: livery boys. They are real salesmen and they are paid in relation to the number of papers they handle and the customers they serve. They bring to their work a buoyant enthusiasm and loyalty which is reflected in the admirable relationship which exists between them and the rest of The Times' staff. The accompanying photograph shows about half the Oshawa Carrier personnel. The alert carriage and intelligent faces of these lads are proof that their work develops these characteristics so essential to bodily and mental growth. Truly these future citizens and business men are building for themselves "Sound Minds in Sound Bodies". Succeeding The Oshawa' Daily Reformer A Growing Newspaper in a Growing City
