LLOYD GEORGE KEY 70 SITUATION (Continued From Page 1) and Misg KE. Picton Turberville. The former is a Liberal and the last three Labor, Mr. Lloyd George will have his daughter with him in the House; "Uncle" Arthur Henderson, form- er Labor Home Secretary, will have two sons, and Premier Bald- win will have his son with him. though on the Labor benches. Both Sir Oswald Mosley and hig wife, Lady Cynthia Mosley, will be La- NORTHUMBER- Clifton Brown i| bor. members of the next Parlia- ment. They are Labor's most prom- inent titled recruits. Lady Mosley defeated Col. John Ward, former navy who ran as an Independent in Stoke-Upon Trent, This will be her second time in parliament. All three party leaders have been elected. Mr, Lloyd George's in Carnarvon district dropped 3,500 in the first threg- cornered contest of his long poli- tical career, Thomas Rhys, Labor, who lost his sight in the World War,, came second to the Libera leader. Rt. Hon. J. Ramsay Macdonald, Labor leader, led the combined vote of his .Conservative, Liberal and Communist opponents by more than 22,000 plurality. He secured 35,615 votes in Seaham division of Durham, against 6,821 for W. A. Fearnley-Whittingstall, Conserva- tive, and 5,266 for H. A. Haslam, Liberal, and 1,431 for H. Pollitt, Communist. eli STONE, STAFFORD, J. Q. Lamb, Premier Baldwin also fought his first three-cornered fight in Bewd- ley, Worcestershire. He polled 16,5693 votes to 2,675 for the Lab- orite, Sardius Hancock, and 7,186 for the Liberal, S. B. Carter, giving him a plurality of 6,832 over both his gpponents, There were some huge varia- tions in majorities. In Normanto, Yorkshire, the Labor candidate, F. Hall had a majority of 20,732, while in Ladywood, Birmingham, W. Whiteley, Labor, was elect=d by the narrow margin of 11. In Hendon, Middlesex, Sir Philip Cun- liffe-Lister, president of the Board of Trade, rolled up a majority of 16,324, while in the Hartlepools W. Ww. Howard Critten, Conserva- tive, was elected with a majority of 138. Immediately after Mr. Lloyd George learned of his election, he drove from Carnarvon to Llandud- no Junction, to catch the train for London. He declined to discuss the general situation throughout the Kingdom. Labor Lead Reduced London, May 31.--Thke Labor party, maintaining the striking lead it began to amass with the first re- turns in yesterday's general election continued to hold its commanding position as returns came in from this morning's counting, The commanding position of the Labor party, however, was being cut a little as the day wore on ana at two o'clock, this afternoon the position of the Conservatives had been somewhat improved. The standing then was as follows: Labor, 158; Conservatives, 120; Liberals, 21; Nationalists, 3; Pro- hibition, 1; Ind. Cons. 1. The clear majority of the Labor party at that time over the other parties was 11. A half hour previ- ously it had had a clear majority of 24. In the half hour between 1.30 and 2 p.m., the Conservatives won 26 seats while the Laborites won only 16, The Liberals had won 3, while the other minor par- ties held their own. Labor Still Gaining London, May 31.--Labor's tide® still flows swiftly. Today's early returns from yesterday's general election brought Labor gains from the Conservatives in Nottingham South, the Peterborough division of Northampton, Carlisle, Leeds Cen- tral, Coventry, West Ham and Frome. In Coventry the Laborite, P. J. Noel Baker, defeated Major Sir Archibald Boyd-Carpenter, for- mer financial secretary to the ad- miralty in the Conservative govern- ment. In the central division of Notting- ham and East Harwich, the Lib- erals made guing from the Conser- vatives. In other divisions Conservative majorities were cut down, except in Eastbourne and Oxford, where the government can- didates increased their votes over the 1924 election. Viscount Defeated In Shoreditch, London, Labor gave a knockout to Viscount Knen- worth, well known amateur boxer running as a Conservative, Ernest Thurtle, Labor member of the 'last house, was the successful eandidate, Viscount Knebworth is the son and heir of Lord Lytton. Thurtle has been a consistent advocate of the abolition of capital punishment in the army. L. H. Gluckstein, the Conserva- tive defeated in East Nottingham, was the tallest candidate in the field. He stands six feet, seven and a half inches in height. A. Hayday, the Laborite elected in West Not- tingham, is the father of 20 chil- dren. He increased his majority from 2,992 in the 1924 election to 10,317 yesterday, That is to say 46 Liberals are al- read yelected and 46 Liberals sat in the last House at dissolution. Lloyd George therefore has the cheering prospect of adding to his following from the 67 ridings yet to report, some Welsh and certain for his column. In the gains and losses column to date Liberals have won 22 seats and lost 14, pointius to a final net gain of at least 8 geats, which would give Lloya George 54. With the Conservatives and Laborites not far from balanc- ed the little Welsh wizard thus holds all the trumps, It is a situa- tion reminiscent of the eighties and nineties when the Irishmen hela tne balance of power as between Lib- erals and Unionists. One hears on every side gossip about a possible coalition against the Socialists. But that is easier said than done. Fail- ing that, what? Another election in the lata autumn? HIGH LIGHTS + BRITISH ELEGTION (Continued From Page 1) as a Prohibitionist candidate for one of the two Dundee seats. Former Minister Elected Rt. Hon. F. O. A Ad Oo How do YOU tell the difference ?P | Solid silver and silver plate may look very much alike. Pure soap and impure soap may also look very much alike. : Yet it's easy to tell the difference if you look for the "sterling" mark on silver and the "purity" mark on soap. But this "purity" mark is not on every soap. Sunlight is the only soap which is so carefully made from highest grade ingredients that it is stamped : "Guaranteed pure and to contain no adulterant whatsoever." Being all pure soap, Sunlight dissolves readily. It forms plenty of suds so quickly . . . lasting suds which cleanse most economically. They wash more clothes beautifully clean without harm to fabric or colours . . . and Sunlight's pure, gentle suds never ° could roughen or hurt your hands. To the women who have once used Sunlight, other soaps are never really satisfactory. Look for the $5,000 Sunlight Guarantee of Purity on every carton. | It. means real economy--longer life-to your clothes -- protection to your hands. '. . 4 LEVER BROTHERS LIMITED, TORONTO $02 ) .
