" THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, TUESDAY, JUNE 4, 1929 The Whitby Daily Times WHITBY LOSTTO NORTH OSHAWA SCORE OF 10707 Visitors Ran Wild in The Seventh Inning and Scored Six Runs (By Staff Reporter) Whitby, June 4--Scoring six runs in the 7th innings, the North Oshawa softball team came from behind to beat the locals 10-7 in an exciting South Ontario League fixtures wits nessed before a large crowd at the town park, last night. The locals were leading 7-3 until this fatal inn- ings, when the visitors went on a wild ~scoring streak, took advantage of several unfortunate' fumbles and waltzed in six runs in quick succes- sion. Whitby tried gamely to stem the onslaught and regain the lead but all efforts failed and North Oshawa was leading 10-7 at the close of the game, Good fast ball was provided throughout and the locals showed superiority in the earlier stages of the game, Herb Neill, youthful . pitcher, was in the box and the visit- ors found it hard to strike his speedy ball, Neill was responsible for five strikeouts and his clever twirling was one of the features of the game. The locals at fiirst showed more handiness with the bat than their opponents and Flannigan provided a thrill in the second frame when he placed a dandy circuit hit. In the fourth innings Mowbray knocked out a nice threesbagger and stretched it into a run when a visiting fielder made a wild throw to the infield. With the score 3-3 the locals got off to a good start' in the fifth inn- ings and four more runners crossed the plate, It looked like Whitby's game©as the four-run lead scemed a formidable barrier. Things began to happen however in the 7th frame. Neill allowed two hits and a walk, the bases becoming loaded." The local infield was res- ponsible for a couple of errors and two North Oshawa runners came home. A third run was scored and it was then decided to substitute Brown for Neill. , Scott replaced Joynt at right field, Neill went off, Brown left 2nd basc for the pitcher's box and Joynt took up this position. The change did not mend matters however for three more runs were secured before the locals were able to stem the tide. In the 8th frame, the visitors threatened to become dangerous again, but a smart catch by Joynt and some food work on the part of the outfield saved the situation. As it was the visitors allied one more EAT-- N CREAM of \ BARLEY i And Be Sure of Good Health Suits .... Scotland Woollen Mills e S. Bae run while Whitby was unable to score, NOTES ON THE GAME Neill was not responsible for the visitors' scoring streak. last night. He pitched good ball throughout and was given splendid support until 7th innings. It seemed hardly fair to pull the pitcher. in the middle of the innings and hardly. fair for Brown to be substituted at a time when the bascs were loaded with no men down. | } Forrester and Mowbray are fond of handling fast balls, When For rester pegs to Mowbray the runner is almost sure to be stooped short at 1st base, Quinton gave an uncanny demon- stration in attempting to do the im- possible last night. A fast low ball came his way and he attempted to block it, It slipped through his legs Newt Joynt made a great catch when he ran out from 2nd base in the 8th innings, Newt had to lean backwards but he retrieved the ball Flannigan also performed smartly when he caught a fly in the outfield, He tripped, but still retained the ball. The locals are capable of playing much better ball than they did in the 7th innings. Two or three crrors counted for as many runs. EAST APPLICATION OPPOSED BY RESIDENTS OF DISTRICT Matter Sent on to the Gen- eral Purpose Committee of Council The question of gas stations on King street east again bobbed up as a subject of debate for the city council at its meeting last night, when the Supertest Petroleum Cor- poration of London, Ont, applied for permission to erect a gasoline service station on the north-east corner of Division and King streets. No car storage or repairing busi- ness would be carried on in con- nection, it stated, A petition of 37 ratepayers and electors of the im- mediate vicinity, opposing the erec- tion of a gasoline station on this site, way presented, and both the presented to the general purpose committee of the council for con- sideration. J. P. Mangan appeared before the council on behalf of the Super- test Company. He referred to the application of the British-American Oil Co., which was granted last year, after much discussion. No hardship had resulted to any per- son from its erection, he said. The Supertest Company was an alle Canadian company, said Mr. Mane gan, declaring that he did not be- lieve that hardship would prevail against any residents of the vicine ity if the station were erected. In Business District It was in a business district, and any of the property owners might at any time receive favorable of- fers for their property as a busi- ness site, If the petition against 1t represented a large majority of the residents, the applicant company would not persist in its application, however, said Mr. Mangan. Alderman Carnell moved, sec onded by Alderman Douglas, that the city solicitor prepare a by-law prohibiting. its erection. Alderman Douglas said that since it-was on the thoroughfare to Oshawa's chief industry, its 'erec- tion should not be allowed. Referred to Committee Alderman Boddy suggested that the matter be referred to the Gen- eral Purpose committee, and after discussion Alderman Carnell's mo- tion was withdrawn and the ques- tion was sent on to this commit tee. «+ +o. $2350 Store Blaze .. ..
