" [THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, A F RAN K STATEMENT TO OUR SUBSCRIBERS HE publishers of The Oshawa Daily Times believe that its readers want nothing but the best--a paper fully repre- sentative of this thriving industrial city and of its prosper- ous surrounding countryside. And Oshawa is entitled to a paper second to none in the province. During its nearly 60 years of publication, The Times--formerly The Reformer--has endeavoured to keep pace with the pro- gress of Oshawa as it emerged, through the successive stages, from a country village to its present status as a busy manu- facturing centre. Since its first publication as a daily in 1925 this newspaper, then consisting of from 6 to 10 pages, has grown to its present proportions of from 12 to 24 pages daily. The meagre bulletin telegraph news service has been replaced by a leased wire coming direct to the Times office which gives its readers a telegraph and cable news service equal to that which readers of the great metropolitan dailies enjoy. Similar progress has likewise been made in every other de- partment. Local news service, news illustrations, features, mechanical facilities, etc., have grown as conditions warranted, until today the people of Oshawa and Ontario County have a daily newspaper of which they can be justly proud. The publishers of The Times have | taken advantage of every opportunity I ow to improve the paper. The results are BRANTFORD readily apparent--but the progress that has been made would not have been possible without the friendly co-opera- tion and loyal support of both readers and advertisers. Though The Times is privately-owned, the publishers consider this paper as being, in a broad sense, a public utility. Because it represents everybody in the community, it has no political, social or \ Subscription Prices of | ' Ontario's Daily Newspapers | Per Week Per Year | Per copy (by carrier) (by mail)* | religious affiliations. It represents, to a marked degree, the independence of spirit which characterizes Oshawa and Oshawa"s citizens. What the future holds forth no one can foretell, but up to the present The Times, as a daily newspaper, has not been a paying venture for its publishers. Every cent of its revenue has gone back into the paper and at times the job printing 'department has had to make up deficits when the news- paper's income failed to meet expenditures. Present indications are that this condition is likely to continue for some time because the demands of a rapidly growing city call for a constant ex- pansion and development on the part of all public services. A newspaper is no exception to this rule. The way in which present losses may. be overcome is by adopting one of two alternatives. \|st--Cut down cost of publication, which would mean sacrificing the guality of the newspaper. 2nd--Ask subscribers to pay a little more for the service that is being given and continue to improve that service as in the past. After very careful consideration the second alternative has been decided upon. This will mean a very trifling increase in cost to the individgpal subscriber, but the total added revenue will enable the publishers to con- tinue the present policy of constantly improving the pape: : New subscription rates in effect from this date # are as follows: By Carrier delivery in Oshawa and im- mediate suburbs... - 15¢ per week. (Payable weekly to carrier boys as usual). By mail, anywhere in Canada, outside carrier delivery limits, per year ...$4.00 By mail, anywhere in United States, per year $5.00 In making this change The Ties | is simply, bringing its rates in line with those of every, other small city daily in Ontario, as reference to the list which appears herewith will show. In the case of the carrier delivery rate in Oshawa a share of the increase will go to the carrier boys as an incentive to them to render even' better service to Times' subscribers. Vy The publishers hope its readers will understand the need for this increase and that they will continue to show their confidence in their home newspaper by giving it their generous support. ®, Outside carrier delivery limitsf The Oshawa Baily Times Succeeding The Oshawa Daily Reformer A Growing Newspaper in a Growing City \
