RUDDY, Local Master at Whitby, (122-128-133) FARMERS TO FIGHT NOXIOUS WEEDS Campaign Explained Meeting Held in Orono this 18th day at Cobourg, June 7.--Road fuper- intendents, farmers and inspectors in the United Counties of North- umerland and Durham all appear to be keenly interested in the er- adication of noxious weeds. This interest was evidenced by the large attendance at a meeting held at Orono on Tugsday night. The chair was occupied by J. G. Kel- lough, county agricultural repre- sentative, Port Hope. J. G. Mec- Leod, Dunvegan, Ont., Provincial weed inspector for Eastern Ontar- fo, was present and addressed the meeting. He went over the act with the weed inspectors in order to explain every point. F. G. Raynor gave an address on "Nox« fous Weeds." AUDIENGE SINGS. 10 SPIRIT GIRL Destinguished Company Un- able to Wring Message From Spook World | London, June 7. -- Olga, thd "spirit" girl, who is supposed to control Rudi Schneider, the young Austrian medium undergoing tests at the National Laboratory of Psy- chical Research, South Kensing- ton, disappointed recently accord- ing to a report in The Daily Chron- icle. A distinguished company, in- cluding Lord Rayleigh, the famous physicist, assembled at 8.15 in the seance room and stayed there till 10.45, but nothing happened. Speaking, we were told through the medium, "Olga" said she was very sorry, but she could do noth- ing. Asked whether she would like any particular sitter to leave the circle, she replied that this would do no good. The power, she explained, had gone. Everything possible was done to ensure success, When "Og" asked us to talk, we talked; when she asked us to sing, we sang -- what- ever the result. But nothing fol- lowed. A special effort was made with "Katharina," a somewhat frivolous foxtrot, for which "Olga" has a special fondness. To a gramo- phone accompaniment, we sang: Oh, Katharina! Oh, Katharina! To keep my love you must be leaner, There's so much could love you. Learn to swim, Join a gym, Eat farina, Oh. Katharina, unless you're leaner I'll have to build a big arena. You're such a crowd my Katharine T got a lot when I got you. Our efforts. failed to satisfy "Olga," and she demanded that we should sing it all together and louder. A supreme effort was made in which, 1 was told, even Lord Ray~ leigh joined, but still the phenom- ena refused to come. The waste- paper basket stayed where it had been placed; the bell under it re- mained silent. the curtins of the cabinet did not even quiver; the little '"'materialized" hand still stayed in the outer darkness. Three times Mr. Schneider went into a "trance" with much convul- sive movement, followed by rapid and labored breathing, and before the third trance "Olga™ assured us that here would be phenomena. But again we were disappointed. When the light was finally turned up Mr. Schneider was sitting ou his crair bathed in perspiration and looking exhausted. The electrical control worked perfectly. All wore metal bands on their wrists and ankles connec= ted with the electrical circuit, Wuile the hands and feet of the medium and sitters were in contact a red light burned in the indicator on the wall. If the circle was broken the light went out. It was diffi- cult to believe that under such conditions trickery could have been possible. The sceptic will say that the per- fect control explained the lack of "phenomena," but Lord Charles Hope, who was present at a sitting said that the control then was ex- actly the same and several things happened. Henry Price, director of the laboratory, confirmed this. "The psychological conditions were bad," he said. "There was no life in the circle. Tt was dead. A negative sitting under such con- ditions is not unusual." of you two The Prince of Wales has a blue derby.
