GORGEOUS PAGEANT HELD ROYAL YORK Scenes of Gaiety Succeed Formal Ceremonies in Banquet Hall Splendor Everywhere Flower Decked Corridors-- 2,000 Guests Are Present Toronto, June 12--There was gaiety at the Royal York last night. The banquet halls were still echoing with the inspired words of statesmen, of Judges, of men of commerce, of the men in whose hands lies the future of Canada. These men had met in the palatiel hotel yesterday noon, when the representative of his Majesty George V., the Viscount Willingdon, formally declared it open, and the oc- casion was onc of solemnity and gravity. But there was laughter last night. Many of these same statesmen, Judges and nien of commerce were there, but officialdom was forgotten and the desire for gaiety and laughter wad* uppermost. Memorable Pageant They had their charmingly attired ladies with them; silvered-haired wives many of them with memories of very early Toronto--if not actually 6f Muddy York. Their daughters, smartly clad; young matrons and de- butantes, with their picturesgpe long- skirted frocks, their lines coiled locks and their eager and very real interest in the magnificent and me- morable pageant in which they were privileged to play . part. It was an evening of fascinating amusement, for there was so gauch to see, so much to do, and tli® hours sped all too quickly, There was the vast hostel itself, offering a thousand delights to the two thousand people who thronged its ballrooms, its flower-decked corridors and the many smaller rooms which were used for sitting out. There was dancing in the three ballrooms on the caouvention floor, the concert hall, the main din- ing-room and th large ballroom, Each of these great rooms was a fascinat- ing and ever-. charming picture, and the attractively clad feminine guesfs and their escorts moved about. Sup- per tables decked with pink roses were arranged in each-of the rooms, the centre of the floor being kept clear for dancing. The big ballroom was especially lovely, for in addition to its exquisite hangings of a deep pinky mauve shade and its magnificent crystal chan- deliers, it seemed to attract the ladies in the loveliest frocks. There was a beautiful blonde debutante in a gown of. apple green which touched the floor, and whose wide skirt billowed out from a slim, tight bodice. Then a strikingly handsome brun= ette in delphinium blue, who laid a scarf of a brilliant rose shade on the white cloth of the supper table when she answered the call of thy excellent orchestra, which was stationed on a raised dais at the side of the roca In the concert hall the orchestra oc=« cupied the stage at the north end of the room. As it played the control lights were dimmed, and the mus= icians were revealed against a back< ground of soft golden light, framed in hangings of blue velvet, As cach couple first entered the ballroom in which they were to have supper they were given a unique souvenir of the occasion, a souvenir which will be treasured for a life< time, then handed on to children and grandchildren, for whom the Royal York will be an accepted fact, Distinctive Souvenirs For th feminine guests there were exquisite vanity cases of gold, fashioned in the shape of a diminutive hand mirror and bearing the crest of the hotel in black enamel. For the gentlemen there were gold cuff links, also bearing the crest, and gold Eversharp pencils, The menus also will be treasured as souvenirs, and will bear many inter- sting autographs, for there were many distinguished visitors at the Royal York last night attending the inaugural supper dance. Fairyland is Glimpsed It was a bit of fairyland--quite a good-sized bit, for the floors are many and the rooms legion. Visitors realiz- ing this, dropped all their mortal wor- ries and cares as soon as they turnd on to Front Street. For above the familiar haunts of that thoroughfare's miles of train tracks, the Royal York seemed to hang suspended over a commonplace and sordid world. / It was just a curious trick of light- ing the upper floors--but it was fairy- land just the same---for the moment. The floral decorations in the hotel were done by Charles K. Cooper, the florist whose new shop is located in the hotel. Mr. Cooper decorated the lobby, all dining-rooms and private dining-rooms, grill room, the Venetian room, convention halls and the mez- zanine. Mr, Cooper states this is the largest floral decoration of its kind ever attempted in Toronto, BOY FALLS FORTY FEET, IS UNHURT Four-year-old Toronto Boy Lands on Side- walk - Toronto, June 12.--In a 40- foot backward tumble from an up- per window of his home to the sidewalk, Toronto's "India rubber boy" escaped unhurt yesterday. It was the third escape from death in his four years of life. The boy. is Beverley Tilley, who lives on the top floor of a house on Monteith street. Neighbors and police awarded him the sobriquet of "India rubber boy' after they had heard how, after striking the sidewalk with a dull thud, he had risen breathless and bruised but otherwise unhurt and had run up three flights of stairs to his moth- er. - Six weeks ago, in Woodstock, Beverley rose from the pavement with nothing more serious than a bump on his head after he had been struck by an automobile and hurled nearly 20 feet. When he was two years old he recovered from an attack of spinal menmin- gitis after sgctors had given up all hope for him. Yesterday's performance came about when Beverley, sitting on a window seat, leaned back as he talked with his mother. He meant to lean against the window glass, but it had been raised. He flipped through, his feet disappearing as his mother ram to catch him. A few feet below the window he struck a group of hydro wires. He landed on his back 'and head at the front door, his legs hanging over an eight-inch wire garden fence. One leg was scratch- ed by the wire and both legs and an arm were bruised. \ He was a lingering sort of a lov- er, and. when they were saying "Good night" for the twentieth time he remarked: "We live in a wonderful age, darling. Just think how everything is becoming wireless now!' Yes," she acqui- lesced. "Pa was only saying this {morning that even the sofa was be- coming wireless."
