REAL ESTATE DEAL AT ORONO Toronto Man Buys Dwelling of Mrs. Frank Gilbank Orono, June 18--~Mr, Seamon, of Toronto, has bought the Mrs, Erank Gilbank dwelling place and one-quar- ter acre of land at Leskard, Mr, John McRue, jr, has resign- ed his position as accountant at the Orono Creamery. Miss Agnes Balmer, of Toronto, spent the past week at Mr, M. J. Lamblyn's. Mrs. McNeil, widow of the late Charles McNeil an ex-warden of United Counties of Northumberland and Durham, passed away last week at Uaknia, interment taking place at lda, cemtery, Cavan township, Mr. and Mrs. W, J. Stutt and Mr, Thos. McNeil attended the funeral. Mrs, Wyvan Reid, nce Florence Stinson, was taken to St. Michael's hospital, Toronto, on Sunday last, to undergo an operation, which friends will be pleased to learn is not con- sidered by attending physicians to be very serious, She cxpects, however, to be in the hospital some weeks. Miss Loreen Lorriman, teacher the past year at Fleetwood, Manvers township, has been engaged to teach Shaw's school on the highway, Dar- lington township the coming year. Mr. William Lycett, an Orono boy, teacher at Shaw's for a couple of years resigned to take a position on the Oshawa teaching staff. The Women's Missionary Society was well attended Tuesday afternoon, group four, Mrs. Fred Tamblyn, con- vénor, arranged the program which was in the form of an "At Home," the tables being numbered and given the name of some Mission field, Young People's Work, Temperance and Strangers and as the number was called a message was given from each table. The Scripture lesson was read by Miss Davey, reading by Miss Flora Cobbledick, vocal duet by Mrs. Fred Trull and Mrs, Will Cobble- dick, vocal solo by Miss Laura Allin, reading on "Stewardship" by Mrs. A. J. Knox, comprised the program. A very dainty lunch was then served by the group and a very pleasant and interesting meeting came to a close, The first presentation of the play, "Looking for Mary Jane", preparea by the Orono Dramatic Society un- der the capable direction of Mrs. Donald Robb, was given at Tyrone last Wednesday evening and was well received. Several of 'the poultry farmers of Orono district visited the Sharpe farm north of Tyrone the past week where the largest poultry house in these counties, and perhaps province, is under construction, the main building being 30 rods long and 18 feet wide. There are at present 9,000 chickens of the white leghorn variety under this roof. Messrs O. A. Gamsby, 'Percy Lunn and Alex McNeil attended the grad- uation exercises of the hospital at Cobourg last Thursday evening. Morish Dramatic Club put on their play here in the hall last Friday eve- ning, entitled "And Mary Did," The play was well presented, but owing to other attractions the same evening, there was only a medium sized house, The leading character, Mary Sterling, was taken by Kathleen Lancshire, and MacNall Irwin appeared as Lawrence where with Mr, Cooke he represent- ed Northumberland Trustees Associa- tion. : Mr. W. J. Inch is dangerously ill with typhoid fever at his home in Weston, Last report is that he is showing slight signs of improvement: Mr, and Mrs. Inch were recent vi- sitors at her father's here, Mr, Sam Billings, Mr. Lew Buckley last week sold his farm, a Colbourne real estate man, we understand, being the pur-| chaser, Lew expects to come to Or- ono with his family to reside, Injuries which Mr. Bruce Waddell received to his head and nose when the car in which they were riding was struck by a Toronto street car re- cently, is still causing him trouble and he expects to go to the hospital shortly for examination and possible operation, 0 A very pretty event took place in Colborne on Saturday at 3 p.m. when the marriage was solemnized of Gladys Lavinia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, W. A. Moore, to Kenneth Ad- ams, son of Mr, and Mrs, L, Gams. by, of Orono, at the home of the bride's parents, The Rev. Dr, What- tam, of the United Church, Oshawa, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Mr, Falconer, of Colborne United Church. To the strains of the Wedding March beautifully played by Miss Gardiner, of Toronto, cousin of the bride, the bridal party favoured with sunny skies, advanced across the lawn to an evergreen arch, tastefully decorated with lilacs, The bride who carried a beautiful bouquet of Opehlia roses and lily of the valley, was particular- ly winsome in a dress of white geor- gette with a mauve mohair hat. "I tried to inflate my lifebelt twice." said Tatham. "The lifebelts issued to the passengers are deflated affairs, containing compressed 'air which is supposed to be released on pressure of a button," Tatham, who can swim only a few strokes, says his efforts to inflate the belt were useless. 'The first sign, we had of trouble was when the starboard motor stop- ped," said Tatham. The plane was like a big bird with a broken wing. The mechanic said we might have to make a landing and that it would be best to put on our lifebelts. "The descent became more and more swift, There was no panic, just frantic efforts to adjust lifebelts. Then came the big crash and the rush of water, We were all thrown forward. Those in front, I believe, were hurled against the panels separating the cockpit from the cabin and weré soon helpless, The plane must have turn. ed over. The mechanic had ripped opeh an. emergency exit, but I don't believe I got out that way. I kicked myself free and found some sort of opening through which I clambered, all the time being under water, "I pulled a girl out with me and the Australians, Mr. and Mrs. Fleming, followed through the same exit. "After a few inutes struggling in the water I clmbed aboard the wreck. age and we helped the others aboard. The pilot was thrown into the sea when the crash came." Tatham paid great tribute to the heroic efforts of th crews of the Bel. gian trawler and the the London pilotship, which came to their aid, BRITAIN AND US. T6 LEAD WORLD PEACE Premier MacDonald And Ambassador Dawes Tell of Meeting i (By GEORGE HAMBELTON) Staff Correspondent Cpnadian Press London, June 19--The world learned a little more last night of those con- versations which Premier' Ramsay MacDonald and General Charles Dawes, new United. States Ambassa- dor to Great Britian, held on Sature day afternoon, in distant Forres, Scotland, In the speeches which both made last evening, the Prime Minister at Lossiemouth and the Ambassador in London, there was an expression of the common desire for. the deepest Anglo-American friendship. "The hands we clasped," said Premier Mac- Donald, "were not cold with official correctness, but warm with a friend- ship inspired by a common enthusiasm for sérvice in the cause if inter- national good-will and commen sense." 'Let's be hopeful for the cause of world peace and for the progress. of civilization," the Prime Minister said further, "for in the joint hands of. the English-speaking peoples rests not only their secure guaranty, but as well the ark of the covenant of hu- man freedom." _ But to the details of the conversa- tions the. speeches added little to what had already been announced. There was no intimation of a possible visit. by Premier MacDonald to the United States, and of conversations between himself, President: Hoover and Premier Mackenzie King of Canada at Washington. As in Sun- day's statement, indeed, there were hints rather of a general conference. "We met," the Prime Minister said, "inspired by the hope that we might be instrumental in preparing a board around which other nations might ultimately sit in co-operative fellow- ship, studying ways of gaining a sense of security, not by arms, but by the absence of arms. As to the wide world purpose of what is known as the Anglo-American conversations, hope that neither the large nor the small States will have any doubt that thy are. not exclusive--they are ine clusive," ONTARIO WATERS CLAIM THREE LIVES Child Drowns in Pond-- Border Swimmer Dives to Death Niagara Falls, Ont., June 18.«A stagpant but deep pond claimed the life of a little girl here last night.
