Release Safety Bar Toronto, June 22, -- Disaster, swift and sharp, strode into the heart of Sunnyside last night, Thousands of gay merrymakers thronged Toronto's playground. It was one of the biggest nights of the year, Friday night, wheu To- ronto goes fun-making. Across the wave of joy a veil of gloom was cast, Four persons now lie in St. Joseph's Hospital. They were car- ried from Sunnyside following the failure of the "Whoopee," a recent addition to Sunnyside's amusement concessions, to function properly. Fourteen others escaped and were taken to their homes. The uc: dent occurred at 9.10 p.m. The Injured Are: John Kempthorne, aged 30, Paris. Ont., crushed pelvis and very serious internal injuries, Lit- tle hope held out for his recovery. Mrs. Elizabeth Balne, aged 37, 376 MeRoberts avenue, fracturea pelvis and fractured skull In very serious condition. Frank Balne, aged 44, 376 Mec- Roberts avenue, lacerations of the arms, shoulders face and head. Jack Balne, aged 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Balne, 376 McRoberts avenue, upper arm badly gashed. Kemtphorne and his sister were given blood transfusions early to- day in an effort to save their lives. Kemtphorne was visiting his sis- || ter, Mrs. Balne, having arrived in Toronto Thursday. Mr. and Mrs, Balne had only come to Toronto recently. Early this morning, it was stated, Kemtphorne's brother and sister had left Paris and were coming to Toronto following re- ceipt of a message announcing his condition. With the snapping of a cotter pin, the huge "Whoopee Wheel" was freed from the control of the machinery .and swung. wildly back and forward, pendulum-like. As the dizzy swinging continued, women shrieked and men yelled. Ine of the Balne party, panic- stricken struggled with the iron bar across the front of the car, fastened to hold them in their seats, and finally it was opened. The pair in the next car followed the same action. As the wheel swung them forward again, and their cars started upward, all four were pitched out of their seats. Mr. and Mrs. Balne were riding together in the car next above the one in which the son Jack was rid- ing 'with his uncle. ¥t 1g not known who first conceived the idea of unfastening the safety bar, but evidently the bars of both cars were released as the wheel swung backward and when it turned for- ward again thert was §nothing to support the four In their seats.
