(150-152-153) LARGE FORTUNE FOR POOR FAMILY) Rich Uncle's Legacy Brings Joy to London "~~ Home London, June 26.--A legacy of $30.- 000 has brought joy to.the home of a family in the East End of Lon- don who have never known freedom from the task of "making ' ends meet." Mrs. Schlachaub, who has received the legacy. is the wife of a tailor's) presser, lhew have seven children.' whose ages range from fourteen to twenty-three, and live in Dunstan House, Stepney. y Their benefactor is an uncle of Mrs. Schlachaub, who made a for- tune in America out of textile mills and property in Madison avenue, New York. He died in his office chair re- cently from heart failure, at the age of seventy, "I did not believe that such good fortune came to people in real lig," said Mrs." Schlachaub to a reporter. She was sitting in her spotlessly clean home contemplating the freedom from' worry which the fortune meant for her family, "When the solicitor's letter came from America," she continued, "my children read it with me over and over again to make sure there was no mistake, and that my uncle meant me to have such a great sum of money, "He spent the whole of his life- time helping his relatives, and would not retire, although he had poor health, 'I cannot retire, he wrote in his last letter to me, 'because I want to leave my relations well off.' AMERY ADDRESSES SERVICE LEAGUE Stresses Ennobling Effort And Sacrifice in Great War London, June 27.--A protest against the tendency of present day literature and the modern stage to make it appear that the sordid and horrible side of the war was the whole story, was uttered by Rt. Hon, L. C. M. §. Amery, former sccretary for the Dominions, in a speech at the open- ing of the British Empire Service League's conference Monday. Mr. other side--that of ennobling effort and sacrifice jor causes held dear. He also opnos-A the view that all sufferings in are merel re- sult of blundering incompetence on the part of pcople comfortable at headquarters or light-hearted, stupid politicians." Earl Jellicoe, president, spoke of the difficulties empire settlement. Some of these were due to the fact that group settlement was not en- tirely welcomed overseas, he said. The benefits both to the people of the homeland and to the dominions from empire development were such that he hoped the question would be carcfully considered. The former commander of the Grand Fleet declared he was unable to believe that the spirit which car- ried the old pioncers and their fami- lics through the hardest times was not still alive in the British race. "I therefore refuse to credit the belief that, properly handled, there is not every prospect of successful empire settlement on a larger scale," ke said. me Hon. F. G. REDS RAIDED IN CASTLE IN FRANCE Notorious Agitator Found in Secret Cupboard Unde: Staircase Paris, June 27.--A dramatic raid by detectives recently surpris ed the French Communist General Staff in secret council in an old castle at Acheres, about 12 miles from Paris, and led to the arrest of a notorious agitator named Tho- rez. He has been sought for more than two years to serve a term of nine months' imprisonment for se- ditious propaganda. . The Communist leaders, who ine cluded M. Marcel Cachin, the Red member of Parliament; M:. Sem- ard, M. Monmousseau, and several other party, had been holding a sort of council of war before the police broke into the castle. A green baize-covered table was littered with papers, and there were the remains of a sumptuous repast in what was formerly the dining-room of the mansion, .Bot- tles of the finest liquors were on the table, and the meal would ap- parently have done credit to the finest restaurant in Paris. Red guards had been mounted as sentries around the castle, which is isolated in the woods. Their vigilance, however, was foil- tectives entered the Communist Amery pointed out there was an-|. ed by the police, and when the de- | grand council broke up in digmay. | M. Cachin and his friends were invited to leave the premises guiet~ ly, which they did. The police then searched for Thorez. -They found him, after sounding all the walls, hiding in a secret cupboard under the stair-case. He was almost dou- bled up on a heap of sacks when the detectives discovered him, Thorez is now in the Central Prison in Paris, and lhree of the Red sentries are in custody pend- ing investigation. The castle in - which the Red council took place was bequeathed by a wealthy manufacturer recent- ly to the municipality of Acheres for charitable uses. Since his death the town has elected a Communist mayor and council, and the 'char- itable" use to which they have put the bequest has been to make it the secret headquarters of the Mos- cow intriguers in France. SEVEN YEARS WITH WRONG HUSBAND Tangle of Mistaken Indentity Brought to Light Suddenly Portsmouth, England --One of the strangest marriage tangles on record has just come to light here. For seven years a Portsmouth woman, Mrg. Lavinia Ann Sheels, has lived with a man whom she be- lieved to be her husband, only to discover that he is actually a stran, ger whose real name she does not know. This remarkable matrimonial drama begins seven years ago when Mrs. Sheels' husband, an Austral- ian, left home and did not return. Hearing from a friend that a ' man answering his description had been seen in a dazed condition in Boulogne, she went in search of him, 'and. discovered that he was suffering from logs of memory and ; was unable to recognize her. She brought him back to Eng- land, where he gradually became more normal, though his mind still remains a blank as to what hap+ pened prior to his breakdown, The couplé, who have now two children, lived happily together un- til recently, when Mrs. Sheels discovered, to her horror and amazement, that she had made a remarkable mistake in identificas tion, and that the man she rescuea from Boulogne is not her husband at all. A letter arrived from her real husband who, it appears, is in Aus- tralia and now wants his wife to go out to join him. "I nearly dropped when 1 open- ed the envelope," Mrs. Sheels told me. "There can he no doubt about its authenticity, for 1 wonld recog- nize my husband's - writing any- where. : "I have made a terrible mis- take, but even now I can scarcely believe it. It seems impossible that my 'husband'--I can't call him anything else--isn't my husband at all. When I found him in Bou- logne I had no doubts about his" identity, and I have never had a doubt until this letter arrived." "I don't Intend to give up my present 'husband'." Mrs. Sheels said. 'He is the father of my two children, and we have always got on well together. The only thing is for my husband in Australia to divorce me." But the real problem of this astonishing tangle is: Who is the second Mr. Sheels? Lady Rodney, who with Lord Rod- ney conducts: large farming opera- tions near Edmonton, Alberta, has been chosen commissioner of the girl guides of that province.
