TWO COWS TRAVEL 1200 MILES ON FOOT St. Louis, Mo., Aug. 15.--Just to prove they have as much stam- ina as their forefathers of pioneer days, two blue bloods of the dairy animal world are making a 1,200 mile jaunt on foot. Scorning the comfort of properly Dayton Journal. higher than it was in 1913. appointed cattle Pullmans in which they ordinarily travel, Tomboy ana Alice, two registered Ayrshires with impressive pedigrees are emu- lating the cattle which accompa- nied early settlers on oyerland trails. Their destination is the Nation- al Dairy show to be held here in St. Louis, in which they will seek blue ribbons. From the hills of Vermont, the two cows are trekking across coun- try, with St. Louis as their destina- tion. Here they will seek blue rib- bons at the National Dairy show in October. In their retinue are attendants to care for their wants, and a barn mounted in a motor chassis houses the food and supplies. Despite the additional strain on their vitality, the cows do not shirk their duty as milk producers. One pound of balanced ration is given each cow for every iour pounds of milk produced. No beet pulp, corn silage or hay is carried. The animals graze at night. The trip is sponsored by the Na- tional Ayrshire Breeders' Associa- tion of Brandon, Vt., which select- ed two average animals for the en- durance hike. Original plans call- ed for travel on dirt roads, but experience has shown that hard roads are more satisfactory. Leath- er boots have been provided for such emergencies as rough roaag and sore feet. One day's journey averages be- tween 10 and 14 miles. The cows will walk every day with the ex- ception of a two weeks' period at the Ohio state fair.
