Washington, Sept. 5.--The wys« tery of Harry F. Sinclair's freedom from prison pallor, despite his so- journ of four months in the ats- trict of Columbia jail, apparently was solved Tuesday when Super- intendent William Peak explained that his multi-millionaire prtsvuer takes a short automobile ride sev- eral times a week. Replying to charges that Sinclair is allowed to go on pleasure rides while serving his six-months sen- tence for contempt of the Senate, Peak said the oil operator has been assigned to special duties which make automobile rides outside the prison walls necessary. Sinclair's trips into the outer sunshine are not for his pleasure or health, but for dispatch of necessary jail busi- ness, Peak explained. As jail pharmacist and assistant to the institution's physician, Peak said, Sinclair accompanies Dr. Morris Hyman on expeditions to a special jail clinic on a Potomac River wharf, where semi-trusty prisoners load and unload commo- dities shipped by water to and from city institutions. A force of from 40 to 50 prisoners from the District Reformatory has been 80 employed at the dock for several years. Attends Prisoners The branch clinic was installed at the prisoners' quarters on the river front ahout two months ago, when authorities decided to attend to the ailments of the stevedores there, rather than remove the sick to the main jail for treatment. As soon as the clinic was set up and Dr. Hyman started his frequent vigits, Sinclair was assigned to ac- company him. The distance from the jail to the wharf is slightly more than a mile. The trip is always made in Dr. Hyman's automobile, usually in the afternoon. Peak said the most direct route is always taken unless the doctor finds it necessary to stop at a drug store going or com- ing. He and Sinclair are always back at the jail in time for -their evening meal, Peak added. Visitors to Sinclair have fre- quently remarked about his ruddy complexion, unusual for one sO long confined to a prison. It was partly his excellent color which led to abandonment of the supposition that Sinclair's appeal for executive clemency, recently filed with the Attorney-General, was based on a plea of ill-health. Favoritism Charged Several times since Sinclair's in- carceration on May 5, charges have been made in the Senate that he was being favored over more hums= ble prisoners. These have always been denied by prison authorities. In the early stages of his imprisons ment, reporters were: temporarily barred from the jail to "protect" Sinclair from publicity. Sinclair first served a three- months' sentence for contempt of the Senate, and now is doing a six months' term for contempt of court, resulting from jury-shadow- ing activities during his trial with former Secretary of the Interfor Albert B. Fall on a chage of con- spiracy to defraud the. Govern- ment. Since part of the two terms were served concurrently, Sinclair will be eligible for release in No- vember, unless pardoned before then by the President. The late Roy K. Moulton, the hum- orist, said one day in an argument about censorships: "Censorships would be all right if ~ they weren't always looking: for things to censor. This causes them to see evil where evil doesn't exist, "The average board of censors is like the girl from the Bible Belt. She was a pretty girl, and she had been very strictly brought up, and she came to the great city with the idea that it was a terribly wicked place. "She was soon holding down a job in a department: store. The first day she went to work an old gentleman stops at her counter. He smiles and says politely: "I'm looking for something dainty in silk underwear for--' "But the girl from the Bible Belt cuts him off short. : "'You better look somewhere else, then,' she says hotly. 'I ain't makin' no dates with old back numbers like you.""
