D Tresidder, representative REPRESENTATIVES IN VU. 8, Powers and Btons, Inc, New York and Chicago, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1929 ------ A LARGE ATTENDANCE WANTED Tomorrow evening the Oshawa Chamber of Comes merce is holding an important general meeting in Rotary Hall, According to the officials of the cham» ber, there are business matters of vital importance to be discussed at this meeting, so that it is of vital importande that there should be as large an attendance ww possible, There is too much Inclination en the part of the vitlsens of Oshawa to overlook the facet that the Chamber of Commerce is an impartant eivie institu tion, and that all eitizens have the privilege of attend» mg its open meetings, and profiting by the discuss sions of matters relating to the welfare of Oshawa, This is a grave mistake, and it should net he allowed to keep any citizen away from the meeting tomorrow aight, The business men of the city, In particular, should take an interest in this organization, because it is working to build up a better and more prosperous community, ene in which business will be better, and which will continue to make progress in the future as It has done in the past, It Is unfortunate that the Chamber of Commerce meetings have not always been well attended, The chamber needs the whole-hearted support and co-operation, of Wl 'citizens, and the de- sire to give these ean be admirably expressed by a resord gathering at the Rotary Hall tomorrow sevens ing, ANOTHER PROVINCE GONE WET Nova Scotia, by its vote of last Thursday, has Joined the seven other provinces of Canada whieh have given up their temperance legislation, and have gone back to a policy of government sale of liquor, Possibly the example set in Ontario in the vote ol the previous day had something to do with the Nova Scotia result, for the people of the maritime province might well be excused for thinking that what is goed enough for Ontario is good enough for them It must be admitted by even the strongest friends of temperance that there has heen something yrong with the efforts made all over Canada to put prohibis tory legislation into effect, That is the only states ment that can be made in the light of theae twa votes, And it is quite likely that, in analysing the reasons for this, the chief reason is to be found in the lack of energy on the part of the temperance peaple in maintaining a 'strong body of public opinion in favor of prohibition, It is useless to beat aveund the bush, Tha defeat of temperance measures in seven provinces of Can: ada can to a large extent be traced to the failure of the adveeates of prohibition to continue their work of education, not enly as regards the evils of the liquor trafic, but also as to the necessity of mains Anlning temperance laws onde they were placed on the statute books, There was a tendency, ence the temperance acts became law, to consider the job finished, and to let things take care of themselves, This was a fatal mistake, and it has resulted in the undoing of the werk of many years, It is to be hoped that the present preponderance of publie opinion in favor of government sale of liquor is but a passing phase, and that in the fulness of time the people of Canada will come ta see the folly of this peliey, and will be prepared to take even more drastic measures than have ever before been attempted for the wiping owt of the whole liquor trafic, ' LABOR STRONG IN BRITAIN hf ------------ 2 The municipal elections in Great Britain have shown © that the Laber success in the last Brash general * elogtion was ne flash in the pan, But that it was the _ result of a great accession of strength by the Labor movement, These elections in Beltain are carried on | along strietly party lines, and in le vote last week the Labor candidates won striking success, They wahawed a net gain of 90 seats, while the Conservatives had a net loss of §§ the Liberals a net loss of 1§, and those classed as Independents a net loss of 20, It da elear from these few statistics that the Labor movement has taken a strong hold on the British and that ita popularity is even more pros i0ed How than it was at the time of the parlias mentary election of last May, This is net surprise sdngy taking into consideration the spectacular achieves ments of Labor ministers of the government, These achievements have undoubtedly eanght the public in agination, and the result 18 to Be found in the muni: eipal election vote. And it ia quitg likely that if ans other genbral election were to be held in Britain in the near future, the Labor party would win an even victary than it did at the lst election. Pers haps is why the two old parties are net very anxious to turn out of power a government which today hag no eolear majority in the House of Com- - ORS AMF SA Rd A cad icia THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1929 REGULATING IMMIGRATION fipeaking at Winnipeg a few days ago, Hon, Robert . Works, minister of Immigration in the federal governs ment, stated that "ne mere people will be allowed inte Canada than It is possible to absorb into the body politie/ It is to be hoped that the minister means what he says, and Is prepared to put a peliey of that type inte effect, The Times has consistently advocated that thers should be ro active eampalgn 'to promote Ine discriminate Immigration Into Canada until such time "as those who have already come to this country have been absorbed in a satisfactory manner, It is useless for Mv, Forke to pretend that this is the poliey whieh lias been in effect, The empldyment officials and rer lief agencies in Toronto know only too well that that city has been flooded with eutsefswork immigrants, men who eanie to Canada as farm workers, remained on the farms for enly a short period, and then drifted Into the eities to swell the ranks of the unemployed there, When conditions such as exist in Toronto today sre possible, then it is quite falr to say that too much stress Is being 1aid on mere numbers in immigration, and that there is no intelligent effort at regulation, Bo, let us repeat, it is to be hoped that the Hon, Robert Vorke means what he sald at Winnipeg, and that there will be no more immigrants persuaded to come to Canada to walk the streets of the big cities in search of werk, A PREMIER WHO 18 HUMAN There ean be no questioning the great personal popularity of Premier Ferguson throughout the length and breadth of Ontarle, The fesult of the election was a splendid tribute to the manner in which he has caught the public imagination, And that Is largely because he has human, qualities which make themselves felt by all with whom he comes In contact, There Is a type of man in publie life who never seems able to come into close and Intimate contact with the people, not because they have no desive to do so, but rather because they have missed the knack of touching Just the right spot, Mr, Ferguson Is not that type of man, He knows the value of his Aashing smile and his hearty handshake, He Is hail-fellow, well=met wherever he goes, and no matter what sits uation may confront him, he always seems to have Just the right way of handling it, There is no thought in these comments of making any comparisons, because there are plenty of men with these same qualities very highly developed, Bul it isa fine thing to find the man whe is the premier ef Ontario possessed of such attributes as to make people realize that he is very human, and is, after all, ene of themselves, BOOK WEEK IN CANADA There Is a strong feeling in the public mind that the custom of setting apart eertaln weeks for spes cial propaganda purposes is a trifle overdone, This is true only when what originally were worthy objects have been commercialized, so that the public has be come disgusted with them, That attitude, however, eannot be adopted with reference to Canadian Book Week, which is being observed during the present week, The main value of this week is that it is net directed Towards the commercial success of books simply Because they are written by Canadians, irrespective of any ether eons sideration, As the Montreal Star says, if a book 1s net worth reading, there is not the slightest warrant for advocating such a book, no matter whether a Canadian is the author or not A widespread misconception has arisen about Pook Week in this country, due, it viust be admitted, to the grossly material attitude taken by some of its most loudly-spoken advocates, A large number of people refuse to be associated with it because they think its alm is to make them buy Canadian books, That should not be the case, The sole justification for holding a Book Week, in fact, is that the encourages ment of good reading is desivable at all times, Ry all means let us read Canadian books, more and more increasingly, if they are worthy to be read, Dut let us net indulge in any meretricious boosting of indif+ ferent material just because it happens to be Cana- dian, This is the sentiment of every Canadian author worthy of the name, STUDYING MARRIAGE The Central YM.C.A, has instituted a series of classes for yound men, at which the problems of matrimony will be studied in a serious manner, This is an interesting innovation, but ene which ean fulfil a very useful purpose, Young men, in these days, are given training and education in trades and ocous pations in professions and for business life, but it is something new tp find them being trained for the serious business of marriage. A course of this kind should be worth while, partieularly if the teachers are themselves married men, and have, by experience, learned the pitfalls to avoid, and have acquired a knowledge of the mysterious ways of women-kind, EDITORIAL NOTES Tan't it nige to he able to walk a couple of blocks without getting inte a politieal argument?
