Romp to Music Supplied By Hurdy Gurdies Montreal, Itinerant musicians and fast passing from the streets of Montreal. There is now not one single "one-mamband" in the city. There are only 29 men with "hurdy-gurdies," as the street or- gan was familiarly and euphoni- ously called. There are still fewer itinerant knife-grinders. It would be difficult to account for the disappearance. Perhaps it is due to an improved taste- in music or to the fact that most people have some kind of musical instrument in the home or to the difficulty of wowing about the streets with ro many other vehicles upon them. Perhaps it is simply due to snobbery or sophistication ou the part of the populace. The barrel organ has for long been falling from its high estate. It was known in Holland in the 16th century and in the 17th and 18th centuries it was in common use in churches, when organists were scarce. But it has since then only been on the streets, pushed about on wheols, It was at <ne time a great blessing to little children of the slums who used to gather rouna to hear the only music that could ever strike their ears. And it has becn known for long that the or- gan-grinders were able to make far more money in poor districts than they could in rich, Now there is little chance of children hearing the music above the din of the streets and no chance of their being able to dance with any safety cround the hurdy- Jan, 4. rdy. Probably all these reasons have worked towards the abolition of the barrel organ from the city, Other changes htat have taken place among even the remaining barrel organs are the facts that the moneky is never seen accompany- ing the musician and only occa- sionally does a cage containing love-birds appeared fixed to the front of the hurdy-gurdy. These birds were kept, in order to help the good lady organist to tell the fortunes of} the little children that brought' their pen nies to the musicians. The lady would open the cage and insert a litle stick on to hich one of the birds would hop. She would then pull out a little drawer containing small squares of paper on which were printed--apparently-- all the possibilities that earthly life could hold for any one, And the bird un- erringly picked out the very slip that told exactly tl.o truth about the future. The future 1 generally rosy and the character sketch was most remarkably fav rable. It was impossible to believe for at least a weck after getting the testimonial that o.> was as bad a little boy as one's mother was inclined sometimes to point out. A could one credit her conse- uent prophecy that no good was in store for this particular naughty boy, when one held in one's hand not only a testimonial for good character, but also-a very rosy picture of one's future. All, these little consolations have gone with the passing of the organ-grinder. The gramophone and the radio, for all their per- fections, cannot foretell the future and broadcasting stations never tell a fellow that he is a boy of sterling character and outstand- ing genius. JAMES PALACE T0 BE SCENE OF NAVAL PARLEY Representatives Five Great Powers Will Gather In The King's Official Residence HAS HISTORIC ® ASSOCIATIONS Newspapermen Will Occupy Room Where Charles I Spent Last Night By Thomas T. Champion tCanadian Press Btaff Correspondeny) London, Jan, 4---St. Jambs' Pal- ace, where the Five-Power Naval Conference will be held following the formal opening in the Royal Gallery of the House of Lords, is still dcemed the centre whence the Sovereign wields his authority. Buckingham Palace, in the eyes of high international officialdom, is but a residence of the King, occu- pled merely as a matter of dom- estic convenience. To this day pro- clamations bearing the name of the King with the sentence, "Given at our court at St. James's," and are accredit- to the "Court of St. James." Much history has had its beginn- ing within the mellow brick of St. James' Palace, and more is likely ed [%o be made within the next two however, can have reached middle-age, as The Palace. be said to than a late months, hardly more > life i 8 is reckoned i scissors-grinders are | the life of buildings is reckoned in England. The turreted gateway was built by Henry VIII, and still bears his monogram, Henry had a fine taste and when he wanted another palace he~haqd little com- punction in acquiring a hospitai which for some four centuries had | been a refuge for "Maidens that | ' The hospital had | were leprous.' been dedicated to St. Less, hence the name which survived for 800 years. Holbein drew the plans for the new palace."Of King Henry's build- ings there remain the gatehouse, the Chapel Royal (much altered) and the Present Chamber. This is now the tapestry room, and the in- itials of Henry and 'Ann Boleyn, second of his six wives, are upon the hearth-place, Hardly a less un- happy queen, Queen Mary, died there in 1558. Elizabeth was pro- claimed sovereign from the bal- eony of this presence chamber, and in like manner King George was proclaimed ruler from the balebny 20 years ago. St. James' Palace sereved fits most momentous part in the mak- ing of English History, perhaps, in the days of the Stuarts. Nearly all the children of Charles I were born there. The very room in which Charles spent his last night before walking across the park to dit calmly on the scaffold in Whitehall, will be a writing roem for the world's newspapermen during -the next eight weeks. After the Com- monwealth the Palace was placed at the disposal of he who later be- came James II. Whitehall Palace, chosen at that time by Charles the Younger, 'and whose backstairs were often used when Stuart mach- inations were afoot, was eventually burned to the ground and St. James' once more became the sov- ereign's official London residence. The last monarch to reside there was William the Fourth. When Queen Victoria succeeded him Buckingham Palace became the London residence. Nevertheless, St, remains the official headquarters of the court and levels are always held there. Queen Victoria held her afternoon "Drawing Rooms," at Buckingham and the present- day evening courts, which super- seded the drawing rooms after the accession of Edward, are also held at Buckingham, Besides the state apartments the area of St. James' embraces a num- ber of residences, York House, for example, is the residence of the Prince. of Wales. and Clarence House of the Duke of Connaught. Within the Chapel Royal of St. James' many august men and wo- men have been married. Amongst them are Willlam of Orange and Mary, Queen Anne,'Queen Victoria, and the German Emperor Freder- ick, who took for his wife the eld- ost daughter of Queen. Victoria, and whose first-born is now the Ex- Kaiser, In this chapel also were married King George and. Queen Mary.
