ARBITRATION OF DAMAGE ACTIONS AGAINST HEP, THIRTY FARMERS AP- PEAL AGAINST STRING- ING OF HYDRO POLES Much Damage Said Done to Property Valuable for Subdividing Cases are now being heard be- fore an arbitrator in an arbitra- tion eourt being held in the Court Room at Bowmanville of thirty farmers of the district who are endeavouring to settle with the Hydro Blectric Power Commission of Ontario their differences over tho damage resulting to their re- spective farms from the new relief line which crosses thelr flelds, The cases have now occupied two days and are not expected to be over until Friday at the earliest. The Hydro Commission is rep- resented by Sir William Hearst, one time premier of Ontario, who is a counsel for the corynission, and. the farmers are represented by W. Ross Strike of Bowmanville and Hon. P. A, Parmiter, K.C., of Toronto. Re®l estate men from Oshawa were called in to express their opinions of the losses sus- tained by the farmers by the lines traversing their property. The one case that has occupied most of the time is that of Ger- ald Talcott who has a farm just outside the westerly limits of the town 'and on whose property th? lines have crossed in such a way it was stated that t%e land had lost considerable value as a pros- pective subdivision. I. V. Disney of Oshawa told the court how he came to these conclusions, The farm, he sald faced either side of the provincial highway and being just outside the town was very valuable for purposes of subdivid- ing. With these hydro poles strotched across the farm, not parallel with either tences or high- way it cut up the land in such & fashion as to make It almost valueless for this purpose. In the hydro regulations it was stipulated, he sald that one can- not build within sixty feet of the poles, that being thirty feet on either side, and this would mean a loss in building space of several thousand dollars. He '{¢ ued the Talcott farm for suldivisional purposes at three hundred dol- lars, an acre maling a total value for the eighty acres of $24,000. The case of Frank Rickard was gommenced before the arbitrator adjourned last evening, FINE ATTENDANCE AT SHORT COURSES IN BOWMANVILLE Over Fifty Young People Enroll in Various Classes Splendid classes greeted the in- structors when short courses in Agriculture and Home Economics opened in Bowmanville on Mon- day morning, January 6. Twenty- six enthusiastic boys were. ready to take thelr places in the class room where special talks and demonstrations on the various phases of agriculture would be given during this month, while about the same number of girls were present to receive instrue- tion in domestic science, sewing, home nursing and first aid. More students are expected out this week and it is expected that these classes will prove as Success- ful as many others held in the county. Stock judging work will be a feature of the boys' classes and Holstein eattle were judged at Ross Stevens' farm on Monday af- ternoon. Horse judging will be taken up on Wednesday afternoon, January 8, and beef cattle and sheep on Thursday afternoon, Jan- uary 9, while a special seed clean- ing demonstration will be held at the Boys' Training School," Bow- manville, on Friday afternoon, January 10. 89 WERE BURIED LOCALLY IN 1929 January, December and March Show Highest Death Rate There were 89 interments made in the Bowmanville cemetery dur- ing the year 1929, according to the books of the town clerk, John STANDARD MINING EXCHANGE Toronto, Jan. 9.
