PAGE six \ THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, FRIDAY, JANUARY '10, 1930 3,300 SEE NATIONALS WIN EXHIBITION GAME IN NEW ARENA Oshawa Seniors Bow to "Sea Fleas" in Opening Game in Oshawa Arena 'Sea Fleas a Smart Team -- Lou E. Marsh and Harry Lecky Referee Game -- Rowden, Leveque and Houck Look Good--Osh- ' awa Defence Weak hwo periods of exhibition and one pe 10d of real hockey is what the game last night betw-en the Oshawa pe iors; and Toronto Nationals (Sea s), proved to be, is game was the feature event of the official opening of Oshawa's magnificent new artificial ice palace, The game as an exhibition of hockey was only mediocre until the final spasm and then the fans got their money's worth, One of the things that L marred the game was the fact th: both teams were wearing uniforms that were very similar, As a result the puck was being passed to op- posing, ~'~vers and opposing players were allowed to pick up a loose puck without any move to stop them un- til after the mistake was realized, The well known sport writer and N.H.L. referee, Lou E. Marsh, who recently announced his retirement as a referee, was urged out of seclu- sion to handle the game and with the capable assistance. of Harry Lecky, handled the game in a popular fash- ton. * Neither official wore the bell out or tired his arm with consistent ringing but a close check was kept on the rough stuff and the offenders were punished with light penalties, The Oshawa Seniors seem to have taken to the large ice surface and in the last period they showed that they are going to be very much in the running this vear. During the first two periods Oshawa's team were practically demoralized and they could not get going. But the num- ber of #ans who 'left at the end of the 'second period passed up the tid of the evening, because the final chukker produced some real hockey. The Oshawa forwards, mucked rigit in and took the aggressive, and the Sea Fleas were forced to extend themselves to prevent a beating. Jack Bond started at defence, but was very 'ifieffective there. During the last period he played centre and he. turned in some nice hockey while 'up on tHe front line. He checked well, fed passes, and made plays. He "wdrked particulraly well with" Row- den." "Doc" Rowden was the best «Oshawa man on the ice. He scored a real smart goal and was robbed of two by tough luck. Once he hit the post and the other time he missed the top of the net by incl.es. Houck, who started at centre and Art Bl: both worked well at left wing. wasigiven a go on the defence in the last' petiod and he looked good in this position. He checked fairly and heavily. Bill Conlin, Geo. Jackson and Ty Little all got in some smart work at times. Oshawa Defence Weak The locals were woefully weak at the defence. In fact at times 1t looked as if "Hddy' Leveque was the only defence man they had, "Eddy" played a smart .game in the nets. 'Hé saved many shots that loked impossible ang he handled himself nicely whenever the Sea Fléas boré right in on him (which was often). He did not clear his shots as quickly as he might have domé but this will come after a few more practices. The defence gave Lim very poer support, especially in the first two periods, when one man came down alone they allowed him to get around the end, or if two or three mrn came down in an at- tack, both defence men concen- ~NEW MARTIN ; Now "PLAYING HOOT GIBSON ET LONG, LONG TRAIL 1 (Moot Talks Now)' Claes. at the Bat | Base-Ball Comedy On The Levee * 'Musical Promenade Talking Serial Leave Home All Talking All Singing Starting SATURDAY Monday trated on the puck carrier ang .ns a result the man to whom the puck was passed was able to go right in (close to the net. However they |S have showed some very g points and with a few more instructive practices they will develop fast. Bond's work on 'defence compared with his work at centre during the last period showed that he should be up on the forward line, Conlin seems to be a little light for de- fence but he was the fastest Osh. awa man on the ice last night and he rushed well, "Curly" Lane was the best body checkcr on the Osh- awa defence but in practically all of his excursions up, the ice, he overskated the puck. Bill Coulter and Arch Kincaid resort to check- ing the stick rather than to using the body. Coulter is bothered with a bad leg but both he and Kincaid got in some clever work. It is hard to pick out the players who looked the best for the visit- ors. Jackie Kane was too fast for any of the Oshawa team and he figured in most of the successful attempts of the Sea Fleas, Weiner Lough back checked the Oshawa team singled handed for .ncarly three minutes. He vas a regular puck hound and ,was always daop- gerous. Their defence was a tower of strength, Collins, Convey, Burry, Underwood and McKay all showed flashes of smart hockey. Frank Collins, well known to Oshawa fans made the local defence look foolish on several occasions. Home- shaw and Mueller were both good. The last period did more to earn the Seniors some real support for the season than any other thing that they could do. They showed that they are a real fighting team that can play smart hockey. With a few more practices under their belts so that the players can brush up on teamwork and got a little more condition, (quite a little), they will be ready to give all comers a run for their money. The Game $ 1 after Collins got chased for tripping Black brought the crowd to their feet on a lone effort. The Osh- awa team were working combination nicely. Coulter got chased for board mg Kane. Black and Lowden com- bined for a nice goal, but the play was called back. Burry left Coultes i flat-footed and fooled Leveque on.al high shot for the first goal. He stopped the shots, although his | clearing of the shots was not as fast | and clean as could have been. The period ended with Lhe puck at cen- tre ice. Sea Fleas 2, Oshawa (. Second Period It took Oshawa several minutes to get .past centre ice, but after a few attempts they gave Holmeshaw some work to do and nlay pepped up considerable, Bond Jooked bad when | he missed a body check. A score re- sulted making the total three. Osh- | awa came to life then and "Doc" Rowden took it right through but! got chased for holdihg Black 1 then Oshawa began to press. "I | Rowden shot hard and before Holme- | shaw could clear "Bond shovelled it! past for a' goal. He followed this with a hard shot. They were far too good | for the Oshawa bunch. | "Weiner" Lough checked the Osh- | awa team right and left. Bond and | Maroons Win Close Game From Rangers | New York, Jan, i0.---In one of tha hardest and roughest games of New York's Nat.oual Hockey league season, the Montreal Mar- oons beat out ' the New York Rangers 5 to 4 here last night, The victory gave the Maroons a three- point margin of leadership in the league's International group. Four successive toals. spaced ai three-minute intervals through the s:zond period, gave the Maroons their margin and a desperate last- minute attack by Rangers could not overcome it. The Rangers scored twice in the final period but Bill Phillips broke away from their closing five-man attack long enough to tally what proved to be the deciding goal. BENEDICT WILL BE OUT OF GAME FOR ABOUT THREE WKS. Ottawa, Jan. 10,--~The broken nose and facial injuries which Clint Bene- dict sustained in the Maroon-Cana- dien National Hockey league tussle at Montreal last Tuesday night will likely keep the lanky goaltender out of harness until early next month. At his home here, where Benedict is re- covering, it was said that he was likely in for a forced rest of three weeks or more. "Benny's" nose was broken and a facial gash tai wi quired seven stitches to close, when a fly- ing puck from the stick of Howie Morenz struck him between the eyes. extent that it is barely possible for His face is now swollen to such an him to open his eyes. Rowden worked lovely. Three times in a row they worked their way right in on the goal and only a little hard luck and over anxiousness pre- vented a score. Bill Conlin and Houck were the fastest for Oshawa. Conlin made a nice solo rush, but Jost the puck when be tried to cir- cle the met. "Eddy" Leveque made two smart saves when the attacker "had 'only him to beat. The period 'ended with Rowden giving Holme- shaw a hard shot to save. Oshawa 1. Sea Fleas 5. Third Period The final spasm opened with "Stui- fy" Mueller in the nets for the Sea Fleas. Curley Lane got chased soon after play was resumed, Bond took the puck through the defence and Rowden finished the job im -smart fashion for a goal that gave the fans a real chance to cheer and they did. Oshawa Team Wakes Up The Oshawa team had come to life with a vengeance. Rowden, Bond and Hguck' were 'going wild, Row- den went through alone and was badly bumped, McKay got chased. The Sea Fleas were having: plenty of work to do. Conlin sasscd out from the corner to Geo. Jackson who placed it behind Mueller for an- other goal. The Sea Fleas were try- ing too, but Oshawa were checking! far better. "And how the forwards burned it up. Rowden made a won- derful try but no one was there to take the pass. Play was lightning fast. Rowden took the puck clean through the defence and" fooled 4. BURLINGHOFF sre! wt VIGE PRES, € TEBBETT mascot Mueller completely, but the puck nit the post. What a lveak!
