Sculley, Auctioneer, (47-49) CAGED ANIMALS SHRIEK WITH RAGE Zoo Begins on Treeless Swamp on Straits Set- tlements Peninsula Singapore. -- Fiiteen niles irom Singapore, on a lonely patch of tree- less swamp hemmed in by jungle and an arm of the sea, is one of the strangest prisoners' camps in the world -- and the most pathetic, writes Sir Percival Phillips in the London Daily Mail, It is the place where the zoo be- gins, Here the wild beasts, birds and reptiles caught in Malaya and adjacent islands begin their lifelong captivity, From this primitive clear- ing-house they are consigned to hard labor in a circus or paintul inactivity in a private menagerie or a public zoological garden. It 1s an ill-assorted community of the jungle, bound together by iero- city and despair. 1 have never seen such manifestations of anguish and hate as are witnessed here whenever a human being comes within sight. All the prisoners are newly caught, and they refuse to believe that the rough timber cages are real. Their cries of rage resound hideously in the wilderness, and their desperation is pitiful to see. They sleep but lit- tle and the night is broken by their cries, On the mudbank above the lagoon I found ten wooden boxes like dog- kennels, .isolated from the rest. As I approached I was greeted by a chorus of rending growls. Six young tgers, all magmticent specimens, li- terally trembled with fury; one lay on his back in an ecstasy of hate and cursed until he was exhausted. The famil attendant walked calmly along the front of their cages, and they gnawed the iron bars in the futile ctfort to get at him. Alongside were four lesser cats, no less murderous in intent. At the end was a black panther, a beautiful heast; sitting bolt upright on his haunches, staring with malevolent eyes and spitting viciously, He had been only four days in captivity, A night excursion along a high road in Johore was his undoing. A planter returning home on his motor-cycle suddenly became aware that the pan- ther was at his side, loping along gracefully, and apparently trying to decide whether to begin on the man or the cycle. The planter put on all speed with such celerity that the surprised panther was left behind, A few hours later native boys went in search of him, and the following night he was neatly trapped. King Cobra Under a root of matting stretched on bamboo poles were boxes and crates of various sizes strewn about indiscriminately. The Tamil rattled the covering of o and ihstantly a king cobra thrust his hooded head against the wire netting, eager to strike. The lid of another box was cautiously lifted, and a drowsy py- thon, coiled compactly like a length of firchose, opened his sinister eyes. A scratching noise drew me to an- other small box marked "sardines." A weird, hali-human face peered wisfully up at me, and a black, hair- less hand was thrust through the bars. It was an orang-outang, with a diminutive baby clinging to its breast. The baby whimpered; the mother snarled and hid herself une der a strip of sacking. Something plucked at my coat and I turned to find a black, fuzzy monkey, with a mournful face, of the breed known locally as the "Wawa," trying to leave the perch to which it was chained by the neck and hide itself in my pocket. Four honey bears saw this manoeuvre fr)m 'the common prison and stood upright, beseeching to be noticed. There were birds of all sizes, col- ors, and designs, some too foolish in appearance to be credible, like the one with a bill tiger than its body; others brooding ove- their plight, like the defiant eagle, whose breast was torn and bleeding. It kept dashing 'tself with outstretched wings against the wire netting that scparated it from a falcon, in a vain effort to give iattle. There were llamas from South Am- crica, awaiting the fancy of some Eastern collector, a half-grown cro- codile that responded angrily to the prodding of a hoked stick; a leo- pard lashing itself into hysteria; half a dozen tawny wildcats with enor- mous yellow eyes cager to fight any- thing and anybody; a pén inhabited by young wallabies; «peacocks dis- daining a friendly greeting; and oth- er birds with grey plumage three feet long, crowded miserably into cu- bicles and unable to move. Here, in the vast silence of the jungle, the strangely assorted cap- tives are allowed to 'exhaust their fury and gradually to accept their fate. Buyers come to look them over and haggle with the Indian proprietor of the camp. All are for sale. I could have bought the crocodile or the black panther at a fair price, or taken away a cobra in exchange for Straits dollars. Consignments leave every little while for Europe or the Americas. A few days pre- vious to my visit four tigers, a pan- ther, and an elephant had been ship- ped to a public park in the United States, PRENUPTIAL PACT HELD UTTERLY VOID Companionate "Marriage Is Condemned In Bitter Terms By Court . Denver, Colo., Feb. 26--Compan- ionate marriage was condemned in bitter terms by the Colorado State Supreme Court in handing down a decision holding "utterly void" a pre- nuptial contract between the late Dr. Charles M. Duncan. Denver phys- ician, and Hattie E. Duncan, his wife. Chief Justice Greely W. Whitford denounced the contract, under which Dr. Duncan and nis wife agreed to live together ouly so long as both parties were agreeable to the mar- riage, as "nothing more, in effect, than an attempt to legalize prostitu- tion." The agreement provided that if the couple separated. Mrs. Duncan | would receive $100 for every vear they had lived together. and would waive any right to alimony or a wi- dow's share in his estate. ' They were married December 16, 1924, and separated about fourteen months later. Dr. Duncan paid his wife $110 and in turn was given a receipt. After his death she sued for one-half of his estate, which was denied by the County Court. She appealed to the District Court and was awarded the widow"s share. The Supreme Court upheld the Dis- trict Court's finding. "The sacred character of the mar- riage relationship is indissoluble ex- cept as authorized by Iégislative will and by the solemn judgment of a court," the decision declared. "It cannot be annuled by contract, tight hold. The master switch «loses the door as soon as he is through.
