The Winnipeg Granite rink, skipped by Howard Wood, captured the Tan- kard at the Granite Club yesterday afternoon in a play-off game with Bobby Mynro's Edmonton rink from Alberta, 1'ne final score was 12-7. After leading the various rinks in the previous eight rounds, the Alber- ta curlers faltered yesterday morning when they had the championship al- most in their grasp, They were bea- ten by J. M. Darby's Quebec rink in the final game of the draw, and thus Manitoba was able to tie them for the top position, the Winnipeg curl- ers winning their morning game with Nova Scotia by 16 to 7. The Albertas cracked in the morning game were outcurled by the Darby rink af- ter the sixth end, when the score was Itied. Empire Games Make Progress 65-7, Hamilton, Ont., March 1--Stars in their own . particular line, boxers, wrestlers, swimmers, oarsmen, bow!- ern, tennis, rugby and soccer players, are all ready for the British Empire pire Games, to be held here from Aug. 16 to 23, Through days, weeks and months of strenuous exercise, they are preparing, for the greatest test that many of them have ever faced ~ that of competing with the stars from all part: of the British Empire this summer. The Empire Games are not to be confused with the Olympic games, which are held every four years, with the object of promoting internation- al peace. The Empire meet is sim- ply a gatherimg of athletes from the Empire, a sort of get-together. At the Olympic games in 1928, the idea was formed, and once the ball start- ed rolling it gathered impetus at ev- ery turn, The opening ceremonies will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, Amateur athletes who are British subjects and have resided for six months in the country they represent will be allow- ed to take part, the definition being that of the Imperial Olympic Com- mittee.
