"THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 1930 PAGE NINE Interesting Pen Impres- sions of the Coming Attractions on LN J THE LOCAL SCREEN Who's Who & What's What in the Amuse- ment World > 'Dynamite" Packed With Thrilling Episodes 3 Cecil B4<De Mille, who has been king his own time about' enter- g the talking picture field, again roves his right to be ranked with e outstanding motion Dietyte rsonalities with the super-pfo- ction, "Dynafnite," which stands as an epoch-making attraction the field of audible films. "Dy- mite will start an-engagement ay at the Regent Theatre. Created by De Mille from a ory by his ace scenarist, Jeanie cPherson, "Dynamite" is re- ete with thrills, humor, swanky fety settings nd grim dramatic tuations. It seems that its vet- n director has overlooked noth- g-- not excluding a star-spang- d cdst--that might make the otoplay one of the great pictures the present era. Not since "Male and Female" s De Mille contrived settings so ring, picturesque and briiliant in ckground as the ones for "'Dyna- ite," and never, perhaps, has he d the adyantage of such a rapld- -paced, dramatically-sound plot. ery episode in the twelve reels "Dynamite" leads rapidly and thly to the next. There are oose ends, and the audience is ntinually in the position of a gilist who is waiting breathless-. 4 : ly to see what his opponent's next move will be. Conrad Nagel, an outstanding player in both silent and talking films, Julia Faye, with De Mille for many years, and Charles Bickford and Kay Johnson of the speaking stage form an impressive quartet and divide acting honors among them. Bickford's six-foot-two phy- sique. and his dynamic manner fits him perfectly for the characteriza- tion of the coal miner which he so adroitly provides, and Nagel, as Bickford's antagonist for the af- fections of Miss Johnson, is in a role for which he is ideally suited. The plot itself brings the three central characters to a pass where they are frapped in a mine cave-in and where one of the two men must sacrifice himself in,order to win safety for the other man and the girl. One of the most fascinating epi- sodes in "Dynamite" detalts n "aero-hoop" race in which 1s are strapped to gigantic hoops and rolled over and over down a hun- dred yard course, to settle a small wager of $100,000. Other novel sporting sequences in the picture include an archery competition, an exhibition of "Doug," the popular new Holly- wood game, and a display of gowns, glitter and glass bathtubs that might make the most hard- ened society connoisseur gnash his teeth in envy. So well-balanced is the director's estimate of just what it takes to ) ) make a superior picture, that never is one conscious of getting too much emphasis (yi a certain se- quence and every bit of action and atmosphere helps develop the story to--one can say this without much fear of contradiction--the most novel and gripping final 500 feet of any picture of the year. always you would 1] look your best Keep your clothes both cleaned and pressed. "2 - i SHALL CAMERA TO TAKE PICTURFS OF STONACH INTERIOR Cylinder Is Scarcely Bulkier : Than Big Lemon 0 Drop New York, March 8.--A camera made to be swallowed was demon- strated last night to the New York Academy of Medicine by Drs. Paul W. Aschner and Maurice Berck of Mt, Sinai Hospital. Its use is to take pictures of the interior, of the stomach. Hitherto, said the demonstrators, the peri- scope method has heen in common use for "shooting" the interiors of stomachs for medical diagnosis. This camera is scarcely bulkier than a big lemon drop. ~It is a cylinder a little more than a quar- ter of an inch across and just over half an inch long. It is so easy to swallow that the apparatus car- ries a pair of them. They are mounted end to end at the extremity of a flexible rub- ber tube. Between them is an electric light bulb, The control wires reach them through the interior of the tube, The picture is taken by a mighty flash of the midget light, It lasts less than a hundredth of a second, put gives 12,000 candle power. The cylinder cameras do not use lenses, but instead have the pinholes familiar to every amateur, A pin- hole gives perfectly-focused image. There are eight pinholes . in each cylinder, placed so as to give 16 separate views and virtually blanket the whole interior of the | domach, The films on which these pictures are taken each measure one-quarter by seven-sixteenths of an inch. The inventor is ar Austrian en- gineer, F. G. Beach, now in the employ of a New York company. GLAM HOLDS HERON BY TOES FOR WEEK Bird Steps on Giant Clam Which Closes Its Shell and Hangs On Atlantic City, N.J., March 8---A weird yarn concerning a heron and a giant clam was spun by fishermen | {here yesterday. For five days the fishermen had observed from Wild- wood Gables dock fronting Cold- springs Harbor, what appeared 10 be a stuffed, long-necked bird, stan- ding on one leg at the water's edge The bird remained | long in one spot that the fishermen finally agreed that it was a good ex- ample of taxidermist's art, planned by a practical joker, Yesterday, the yarn-spinners said, two clam diggers went out to the spot and found the bird was a her- on, alive and held captive by a huge clam firmly imbedded in the sand. The heron, they said, had inad- vertently annoyed the clam who slept with his mouth or shell open by step ping on the shell the clam retalia- ted by promptly closing his shell on Mr. Heron's toes. The heron was { rescaed and his enemy went into a pot of ¢Fowder, which was offered as proof of the yarn. motionless SAVED Mistress--Yesterday, I wrote some- thing in the dust on the sideboard, and it is still there. "Courting Wildcats" Shows Hoot Gibson at His Best Hoot Gibson the old favorite of the silent drama will be the star of a comedy styled "different" which is playing 'at the New Mariin Theatre commencing Saturday, March 8th for three days, Hoot he- I came the film idol of thousands in {hie pictures on the silent screen and his appearance in the. talkies has been greeted with even greét- er enthusiasm, His presentation will be "Court ing Wildcats" which is considered to be his best and which will hold the interest from the opening scene to the final fade out. Thril- ling scenes of wild west shows are a feature of the picture and the road house cabaret scenes will provide much of the comedy and lots of snappy music. Of course at the back of it all is a girl for it would not be one of Hoot Gibson's pictures if there was not. A ro- mantic love story is interwoveu with adventure and comedy which provides an excellent evening's en- tertainment. Hoot plays the part of a college boy who passes as a sissy to keep his father from putting him. to work in the family foundry, He be- comes attached to a wild west show and immediately starts out to cap- ture the heart of Calamity June a comely performer of the hig show but who unlike most of her sex has no sympathy for men of the ro- mantic type. The wooing and final winning of June is the feature of the picture which provides more action in many different ways than any of Hoot's previous pictures, The genial manager of the New Martin Theatre, Mr, Ernie Marks, always procures the best pictures that are to be had and "Courting Wildcats" is even better than usue al.
