These two years have been years of steady growth and development, of pro- gress, not only in the volume of business done, but in the ideals of service which have been the foun- dation stone of the company's ach fevements since the day, two years ago, when the first order pa out of the yard. In celebrating the second anni- versary of the foundation of this growing lumber concern there is cause for pardonable pride on the part of the officers of the company, of which Mr, W. M. Gilbert is presi- dent. In one of his early announce- ments signed by him Mr, Gilbert sald: "We have every confidence in the tomorrow of Oshawa and this district, and every member of our organization is pledged to give unstintingly of his time and experience, to further the ideals upon which our business is founded, and to maintain and enhancé inac hearty friendliness and en- conragement with which our efforts, so far, have been rve- ceived, to the end that we may truly be one of you, with whom we have chosen to cast our lot." It is interesting to recall that | se it gives early statement, '~c the paramount | n why ti business of the Oshawa Lumber Company has grown and prospered in the brief space of time for which if has been in existence. " The Oshawa Lumber Company was incorporated under an Ontario charter on March 28, 1929, and on the following day, March 29, the first sod was turned for the con- struction of the plant. It was no small task which was undertaken in the establishment of the plant on Ritson Road north. The Come pany took over a piece of property which was largely marsh, under- drained and tiled it, erected its buildings there, and put in its own that day is marked by the mile- stones in the growth of the coms PANY x avy 1 WO years ago a ume ber shed, 60 feet by 100, was built, and there was outside piling room capable of hand The Oshawa Lumber Company has always believed in the encour. agement of local industries. Every- thing that went into the comstrue- tion of the buildings that could be secured in Oshawa was purchased here, The metal in the, buildings was furnished by the Pedlar Peo- ple, Limited, and all the handling equipment was bought from the General Motors of Canada, Limited, And so on down the line the com- pany has followed a policy, where- ever possible, of buying in Oshawa, An interesting feature of the lumber yard of the company is that it is the only fully gra. vity operated lumber yard in the Domini of Ci A long carrier, with freely mov- ing rails, slopes gradually from the railway siding to the lum- ber piles, there being two of these carriers~ between each three piles, Each board, on being unloaded from the car, is placed on this carrier, and travels leisurely to its allott- ed place, where it is picked off, sorted as to width, and piled. The pile is so arrang- ed that the heavier lumber is piled at the extreme end of the carrier, their weight supplying momentum fo carry them, while the lighter boards less affected by the pull of gravity, are picked off and piled nearer " to the car. The yard is laid out so that there is a wide roadway on each side of the lumber pile. There are thus no dead-ends, and it is pos- sible to have free access to any kind of lumber piled in the yard. These two arrangements, the gra- vity unloading system and the free clearance in every part of the yard, save much time in the hand- lipg of the lumber, the former es- pecially saving much lumber and expense, and, incidentally, benefit- ting the ultimate consumer by the W. M., GILBERT President of the Oshawa Lumber Company, which is celebrating its second anniversary in busi- ness in Oshawa, » much of the breakage resulting from the hand unloading of lum- ber from railway cars, For the office, at 25 Ritson Road North, the company has converted a single storey 'residence into a business office of very pleasing ap- pearance. The whole has been panelled in rotary-cut British Co- lumbia fir, which lends itself well to this use. The interior, natural. ly, was finished with wood as far as possible, but an interesting cefl- ing problem was solved by the Ped- lar People, who designed and in- stalled a metal ceiling for the com- pany. From the very start of its operations, from the 1st day ef June, 1928, when the first or- der was received and deliver. ed, there has ben steady pro- gress. No contract nor pro- Ject has been too large for the Oshawa Lumber Company to handle; and no-.order has been too small to receive the cours 'teous attention and service which are the outstanding characteristics of the princi- pals of the firm and all its em. ployees, | Elsewhere in this supplement | there is a record of some of the | large and important projects, in Oshawa, Toronto and eMtsewhere, { for which the company has supplied the lumber and lumber products. | These are but sign posts, indicating the high place to which it has risen in the contracting world, ing that, in addition to serving the people of Oshawa with their needs for lumber, the Oshawa Lumber Company is making the name and fame of the city known far and wide. Success has come in these first two years of the Oshawa Lumber Company largely. through the ef- forts of its principals to maintain the high standards with which it was established. © W. M. TELEPHONE'S AMAZING GROWTH | The amazing growth of the tele | phone in 'Canada has again been | | brought to mind by the' eelebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Ball Telephone' Co. This company | was Incorporated in 1880, only a very short time after the first tele- | phone became an established fact, Though the company operates on- ly in two provinces, Ontario and Quebec, it has ten score company- owned buildings, and controls more than 765000 telephones from any one of which a person may speak not only to any point on this con tinent but also to Mexico, Cuba and Great Britain. Approximately $30, 000,000 is spent annually in addi J Ten-Test Insulation * Gives Summer Coolness, Winter Heat, And Quietness in the Home Material Perfected After Tests in Labratory of the North land Provides Product Which Plays an Important Part in Building of Modern Homes and Other Structures Away up north, beyond the Can- adian Line where winter often howls at fifty below .and holds the entire land in its grim, relentless grip--where gales that*begin some- where within the Arctic Circle, sweep over the icy wastes and penetrate practically all materials of which houses are bullt--an in- sulating building board was born and put to the test in the most ex- acting laboratory in the world, the great outdoors of the Northland, It demonstrated the fact that while brick, stucco, lumber and all types of standard building material could not stand between such temperature « mere barrier of air imprisoned in the millions of tiny cells in this new building board could keep heat in and cold out, and do it at an average saving in the consump- tion of fuel of 35 per cent, And the name of this board was TEN-TEST, for which the Oshawa Lumber Company is the sole dis- tributing agency for the Oshawa | | district. And what is this remarkable new | | material? Merely a product of the | same great north country--spruce | ---that had been used for years for home building in the form of thiek, rough logs but that just waited for the hand of science to take its hardy fibres, put them through a series of exacting proces- pes, compress them hydraulically | under two thousand tons, and give | to them the one thing essential to | perfect insulating qualities--air-- | enclosed in cells by a non-conduct- ing material. Thus, today thousands of houses, industrial plants and publie build- [ings are insulated by TEN-TEST. | TEN-TEST for years has been used for sheathing, as a base for brick, stucco, shingels and other ordinary materials, TEN-TEST has been | used for interior walls, for sub- floorings, for roofs. And the re- | sult has been increased warmth in | winter with a smaller consumption | of fuel, cooler, more comfortabel ving conditions in summer, be- ¢ause heat, as well as cold is ex- cluded by TEN-TEST, and it makes each room quiet alf¥the time, be- cause TEN-TEST absorbs sound. TEN-TEST meets every require- ment that every other form of ma- or other outside material are more then mere roofs, They are barriers that keep the heat in or cold out in winter, and to reverse the situs- tion, they keep heat out and coo! in in summer, This question of TEN-TEST should be seriously considered in planning any type of building, par ticularly in the planning of a home, It will not only increase the pléas- ure and comfort derived from the home, not only will it make ft more economical to maintain but in the new era of insulated construe~ tion that looms just ahead the TEN-TEST insulated home will have a higher resale value, There is no more wonderful ad- venture--no greater source of in- spiration and joy--than planning a new home, or remodelling a home, There is a greater thrill of delight~ fui expectancy than watching the new or remodelled home take form before your eyes, And yet, to the man or woman who builds | or remodels today, there should be an additional source of pleasure | in the thought that, because .of | TEN-TEST, all through the years that stretch ahead, the house will be warm in winter, cool in summer, | and quiet all the time. The Oshawa Lumber Company will be pleased to give quotations or 'TEN-TEST, for any project, whether it be large or small, An estate agent was telling his man to take a sign-board and fix it to the front-garden fence of a house which was for sale. As it was a very windy day, the man was given strict in- structions to fasten the sign firmly. Half-an-hour later, the agent came to the man bellowing with rage. "The wind has carried that sign away!" he roared. "Why didn't you tie it securely to the fence?=I've just heard about it!" "You ain't 'eard all!" replied the man, "I tied it securely as you said and it's taken the fence with it up the road!"
