Guy Cantrell haw bi in a good pite} ching effort against the Wings in the first game. The Leafs spotted the visitors five runs in the first three innings, four of them coming in the third inning, after two were out, Can- trell was not entirely to blame for that, although four hits were made off his delivery in that frame, An er- tor by Joe Harris, a passed ball on the part of Eddie Phillips, and some smart baserunning by the Red Wings added their portion to the scoring. Only two of the runs were earned. In the previolis inning Cantrell should have come 'through without a run, as Art Ruble turned' art ordinary single 'into a hit good for three bases by allowing Williamson's: drive to trick- le through him. But after the third frame the Wings got only two wide- fy separated hits off the Toronto flin-| St ger. and they never threatencd him again, First Defeat for Foreman Opposing Cantrell was "Buck" Foreman. a previously undefeated pit cher in the Rochester string. For three innings Mr. Foreman fetired the Leafs with neatiess and despatch. Elk City, Okla, June 4---A 'man claiming to be Maurice Graham, Western Alr Express pilot and World War aviator listed as missing since his flight from Las Vegas, Ney., to Salt Lake City last Janu- ary, was found working here as a garage mechanic. Months after Graham' flew into a snow storm and became lost on Western Air trials, he said he had assunred the role of mechanic here because he was "through with fly- ing" and was tired "of too much publicity." He said he had reported to West- end Air officials in Los Angeles soon after he leaped from his mail plane when it entered a storm 60 miles from the Ute Indian reserva. tion 'near St, George, Utah, last 'January 9. Hig story has not yet been substantiated by western sources who knew Graham person< aly or by those who participated in the lengthy search for him, Friends of the man here, how- ever, accepted him as the flier and ne ons E1k City Daily News identified him as Graham. GHOST CONFESSION Alleged Murderer Chained in Room of Killing, Police Act as Spirits Springfield, 111., June 4--A ghost act staged by police to force a mur- der. confession from Harry Ross caused Circuit Court Judge Charles Briggle to rule out the confession and resulted in collapse of the mur- der case. The indictment against Ross, charging him with the mur- der of John Babcock, a former busi« ness associate, was nolle prossed by the state. Conrad Jesberg, chief of detec- tives, admitted that he and three other detectives took Ross to the room where he was alleged to have killed Babcock last February and staged a ghost scene. Two of the detectives, according to Jesberg, Went to the basement yof the dwelling and started groan- ing, another dashed about the room with a sheet draped about him, the fourth speaking of the spirit of Babcock, demanded of Ross, who was ghackled and chained in a dark corner: "Harry, why did you kill me?" Briggle upheld police in declar- ing he did not believe there had been any beating, but ruled out the purported confession on the ground that Ross' résistance had been de- creased by the long hours of ques- tioning and that he did not sign the confession at his own free will Won Lost P.G 27 18 64 x +.15 Boston ..6 Pittsburg ...... 9 Cincinnati .,... 11 Philadelphia .10 ALTERATION n was never the same again.
