He held up to .the assembled manufacturers the ideal of Canada as a country standing distinct among the other nations of the world. Canada can never be any- thing but Canadian, he declared, It was bound to be a product of the accomplishments of the past and what succeeding generations built upon the sturdy foundations laid by the pioneers. "Our language will always be fundamentally the English lan- uage," he declared. "But it will not be the English language that is spoken in England." It would be a 'Canadian edition, Sir Henry intimated, similarly, he predicted the building up of dis- tinetly .Canadian traditions, liter- ature, art and music, It was important, he declared, to build not in' this country, bit "to lay the foundation for a fine and strong Canadian character." A character that would be distinctly Canadian -and nothing else." CRITICIZES TYPE OF BRITISH IMMIGRANT BROUGHT TO CANADA (By Canadian Press Leased Wire) Brockville, June 6---Criticism of the type of British immigrant being brought to Canada was voiced by T. H. Bell, provincial member for Bell- woodg riding, Toronto, at the an- nual session of the Orange Lodge of British America in convention here, Great Britain had about 10,000- 000 people engaged in agriculture at the close of the war, Mr. Bell pointed out. Today there are only about half than number. Why, he asked, did not Canada get these ex- perienced farmers as immigrants instead of the trainee who, as a class, belongs largely to the un- employed? "We must urge for a better selec- tion of the kind of people we want here," he asserted. "We want qual- ity and not quantity. = We want those who will respect and be happy living under the Union Jack."
