oo I 4 8 B & See Cg SL nr THE OSHAWA DAILY TIVES, MONDAY, JONE Ye, 1970 AKE LEADERSHIP BY WIN FROM COBOURG Gower Wins Pitchers' Duel In Cobourg, 2-1 and Aarabs Oshawa (By Geo. Campbell) The Oshawa Aarabs are rapidly earning a very enviable reputation for themselves, On Saturday after- noon they won another very close, away from home fame, when they defeated Cobourg, right in the Horse Show Town, by the small score of 2 to 1, thereby taking ' undisputed leadership in the Lakeshore Interme- diate League, with four wins and only one defeat, It is now quite apparent, even to the other teams in the league, that the Oshawa Aarabs have a pitching staff which will compare with any intermediate team's in Ontario, Art, Gower and "Duke" Dainty, both port siders, were the hurlers who held the Cobourg batters well in check on Sat. urday, Besides these very capable pitchers, there are "Maggle" Frink and Walt, Knox, two other mounds. men of real ability, The game an Saturday was a real itcher's battle, Ibey, the Cobour urler, went the entire route an pitched lovely ball but his team failed to get their hits when they meant runs, The Aarabs had 7 hits while their opponents had only. three, Reg, Fair played his first game of the sea- son and turned in a good game at centre field. He and C. Elliott were the heavy hitters for the winners, each getting two safe clouts, The Oshawa Aarabs fought for their victory and certainly deserved to win, They scored both their runs in the second inning, Gray was safe on an error. Fair hit advancing Gray and "Lefty" Gower, the pitcher, won his own game with a timely hit, scoring Gray and Fair, The Cobourg team started in to get the runs back and only sterling playing by the Aarabs prevented them, The Cobourg team threatened in the fourth but with a man on bases, the Aarabs pulled a double play to shut out the rally, In the following inning, Wal. den got a hit and the Aarabs din ulled a double play to close the inn. ng. Cobourg was not to be denied however, and they came right back in the sixth and got two hits and one run. They, the Cobourg hurler got the first hit and he scored his team's only run of the game, on Jones' sin. gle. Gower tightened up and pitched good ball until he was relieved in the eighth by "Duke" Dainty, "Dyke" went in and struck out three of the four men who faced him,' to clinch victory for the Oshawa team. Dishing up baseball of this calibre, the Aarabs deserve all the support they can get and certainly better sup- port than they are getting at the pre- sent time, If they continue to play 'the brand of ball which they have displayed in their Inst four games, they will be hard to beat for the title, Every member of the team played well on Saturday and each did his share towards winning the game, Gower only allowed three hits and his teammates played beautiful defensive ball, The Cobourg team tried hard but they did not get any breaks, Walden, Ibey, and Jones got the hits for Cobourg. C, Elliott and R. Fair each got two safeties for the Aarabs and Young, Gray and Gower each got one to ll out the total of seven. Ibey issued one free pam while Gower , away three first. buse tickets, Ibey struck out eleven batters, Gower made seven whiff the air and Dainty fanned three.
