Ontario Motor Sales Limited 99 Simcoe Street South MOVING SAND DUNE SAFELY ANCHORED! \ Kitty Hawk, N.C.--Kill Devil Hill has "ceased to roam." The big sand dune became fam- ous 27 years ago when the Wright brothers: made the first airplane flight from its brow." The government wanted to build a monument to the Wrights, but decided they could not do so on a moving sand dune. Engineers were called in to plan some method of "anchoring" the hill which has moved 20 feet to the southwest every year since time immemorial. It was decided that if the soil could be made to produce grass, trees and sHrubs, that the hill would "'settle down." That was tried, and Capt. John A. Gilman of the U.S. Army engineers, says the dune has not moved an inch since (84a) ment will be started next year. early in 1929. Work on the monu- FIELD MICE DESTROY CROPS IN GERMANY. Oldenburg, Germany. -- Field mice have invaded the country dis- tricts in such numbers that thous sands of acres of grain and pas- ture from the Hunte River up to Blutjadingen haye been destroyed. Most of the harvest has been ruined and farmers have been able to feed their cattle only by adding' bread to the ration, a makeshift which proves inadequate in the long run. Consequently most of the livestock is being sold. Attempts to exterminate the per nicious rodents have been unsuc- . cessful. Numerous nests were uns * earthed from which rushed thou= sands of mice, VOTING POPULATION OF WASHINGTON LOW, Washington.--For the first time in history, the voting population of Washington, D.C., the city without a vote, has been calculated, A special census schedule, sum=~ mary of which has been completed, showed 15,105 people in this city of 486,869 population have a right to vote in the state from which they. came. Of the voters, 6,664 last visited their home states in 1929 and 3,729 last visited in 1930, New York, with 1,588 voters here, rank highest in the list of states, and Nevada with only 9, the lowest. Two persons were report ed as entitled to vote in Alaska, and two in Hawaii. SAFE, SHOCK-PROOF BUILDINGS, AIM Studies of Scientists Show Peculiarities of Earthquakes / Palo Alte, Cal.--Discoveries of peculiarities in vibration that pro- mise to be useful in adding to safe- ty of buildings during earthquakes have been explained to the Nation< al Academy of Sciences here. Dr. Lydik 8. Jacobsen, assistant LProfessor of Mechanical Engjineer~ ing, showed how small changes in rates of vibration produce unex- pectedly Jarge changes in action of the earth's surface. It is hoped from these studies, he said, to be able to classify yvar- ious soils, showing how thy differ in transmitting vibrations, so baild- ings may be planned to meet thee peculiarities of each locality, * Experiments and theoretical stud- ies show sand 30 feet deep Lwill transmit at the surface 90 pefgent of a vibration traveling to and fro beneath it at a rate of 60 times a second. Sand 22 1-2 feet deep multiplies this percentage to 140, 15 foot sand to 155 and 7 1-2 foot sand only to 110 per cent, But if the vibrations are in- creased to 120 a second, the 7 1-2 foot layer jumps to 175 per cent, the 22 1-2 foot layer drops to 80 and the other two drop slightly. The vibration effects are compli« cated, Dr. Jacobsen said, and work- ing them out will require much study, Vibrations are so completa that to facilitate the study, Dr, Ja- cobsen produced them in his lab- oratory stripped down to one effect at a tyme. He fets one kind of motion through the action of an eccentric flywheel on a vibration platform. ' Another kind comes from a heavy pendulum banging against a spring in one end of the platform. Studies have been undertaken of the hammer action exerted by water against the face of a dam during an earthquake. ' HOOVER'S FAMILY TREE IS TRACED. Unterkulm, Switzerland. --Ppesi- dent Hoover's ancestors have been traced back to the 13th century, as residents of this Canton of Aargau, by Professor Marco of Beriin, Who has been here several weeks, Professor Marco found traces of the "Huber" family throughout the. 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, The family removed to' the Pala- tinate in the 17th century when work was scarce in Switzerland af- ter "the war'of the Peasants." When the Huber family left the Palatinate in the 18th century to | emigrate to the United States. Pro- fessor Marco says, the name had als ready been Anglicized to Hoover.
