Mr. Ayde at ford Calls for Support of - Capapbeliford, October - 8=Mon- day's luncheon of the Campbellford Rotary Club had the Rev. E. Ralph Adye, St. Peter's Church, Cobourg, 1s guest spealer. : Mr. Adye delighted the Service Club with an address on "Public Speaking which he offered in behalf of the Oratorical Contest soon to be anderway in Northumberland Coun- ty at the instance of the Trustees and Ratepayers" Association. The speaker pointed out that as men of standing in their community, some of them would very likely be called gpon to act as judges in the contest which deserves and is enlisting such wide public support, Further, he declared that men of iffairs owe it to themselves to know how to deliver a public address and hold their hearer's interest. Decay of tory The decay of political oratory, was deplored, and the speaker declared that the recent campaign offered pitiful examples of boring addresses from platforms by men who, if they knew what they were discussing, certainly did not know how to pre- . sent their knowledge. To improve the political tone of the Dominion rested with men who, successful in other walks of life, also have the ability to think on their feet, which, after all, is all that speaking is. The key to success in speaking, Rev. Mr. Adye declared was prac- lice. P "From the baldheaded phase of in- fancy to the balder period of senil- ity," he declared, "practice alone makes the forecful speaker." Mr. Adye's pithy statement seem- ed to glance, verbally, off the shin- ing crown of several noted Camp- bellford Rotarians and they them- selves laughed the most heartily of all y Summary The chief points required in force- ful speaking, as summed up by the speaker, were "Adequate preparation, the proper placing of the voice; elim- throat muscles in delivery; full round inating, as far as possible, of the 'tones and well enunciated words, and 'emphasis placed on enunciating the final consonants, especially the S, T and V consonants. + In conclusion, the speaker, declar- ed public speaking was a matter of thorough preparation' beforehand, convincing statements, and happy de- livery.
