In dramatic fashion, the driver shouted 'and gave the reins a jerk. Eight loping sweating mules came willingly to a halt, The driver shouted "stuck up agin, sheriff, thar on Skeleton Bend." The fact was verified silently by the nods of the passengers. And Col. Billy Breakenbridge, 34, started to gather a posse, just as he had done so many times when he was Seputy under the famous Sheriff John Bechan. ] he posse started out, and the Col- onel found a soap box to sit on. "They used to hold up the old mo- doc with surprising regularity back in the 80's," the Colonel! reminisced. "Lots of times, the stage would never show up, and then we'd gather a posse to ride out and find it tilted over, bloody and shot up, its 'occu- pants dead, its horses and baggage taken away by marauding Indians. "Always the trips of these through stages would bear out the estimate made by an aged Californian, who, writing from the east after he had made the trip, said 'I know what Hell is, for I have had 24 days of it." -y EYESIGHT SPECIALIST i Specializing exclusively in muscle anomalic W.J.
