MOTHER BROWN HAS AN. OTHER SURPRISE By Thornton W. Burgess Some folk may diet, if they will, But as for me, | want my fill. Black Pussy, Mother Brown was still puzzled over Black Pussy. Apparently, Black Pussy had eaten two big dinners and still was. hungry. Any way, that is what Mother Brown thougnt, she couldn't understand it at all, Farmer Brown's Boy syw low puzzled she was and chuckled, "To morrow night you are going to have another surprise," said he, "What kind of a surprise?" asked Mother Brown. "Wait and see," replied Farmer Brown's Boy. "Just you wait and see, You are going to have another sur- prise and then you are going to un- derstand why Black Pussy has been growing thin. All I ask is that you do as | tell you to" Mother Brown good-naturedly Afecd to this, "All right," said she, "I'll do just what you tell me," So the next night she prepared Black Pussy's supper as usual, Farm- er Brown's Boy was on hand and told her to put it out in the back shed where she usually did, and then to wait in the kitchen doorway to see what would happen, Black Pus. % at once began to lap up the milk, hen there was a scratching sound, Black Pussy stopped"drinking. A look of fright came into her eyes, She turned and ran past Mother. Brown into the kitchen and hid under the stove, Mother Brown couldn't un- derstand it at all and turned to go after her; but Farmer Brown's Boy called to her, "Never mind Black Pussy," "aid he, "You stay right where you can watch Black Pussy's dishes, Do you hear that scratching?" "Yes," replied Mother "What is it?" "Some one wants to come in," said he, "Some one is getting a trifle im- Brown patient, I'm going to open the door now. So Farmer Brown's Boy very quiet- ly went over and slid back the little oor that covered the hole made for Black Pussy to go in and out of the woodshed, For a minute nothing hanpenedy then, in through that hole, walked a gentleman dressed in black and white, Without hurrying in the least, or without the slightest hesi- tancy, he walked straight over to Black Pussy's dishes and there made himself quite at home, In the kitchen doorway Mother Brown stood with such a funny ex- pression on her face, She was look ing down at Jimmy Skunk with open-maouthed astonishment, At first she couldn't find her voice. No, sir; Mother Brown simply couldn't find her voice, When she did, it was to say, "Why, why, Jimmy acts as if he had been here before," "He has," ehuckled Farmer Brown's Boy: "You were so sure that you had been feeding Black Pussy so well, and all the time you haven't been feeding her at all, but have been feeding Jimmy Skunk, Just see how fat the rascal is, Jimmy knows a good thing when he finds it; and when he discovered that he could come in through that cat-hole and get a good meal, he made the most of it, Now you understand why Black Pussy has been getting thin, We'll have to shut the door on Jimmy, I guess, hereafter." "No," said Mother Brown most de cidedly, "No, we'll not shut the door on Jimmy, I guess we can afford to feed him and Black Pussy, too, Here- after, I'll feed Black Pussy in the kitchen and put a meal out for Jim- my just the same." Then Mother Brown. remembered that Black Pussy was still dinnerless, hiding under the kitchen stove, and she hurried to prepare a good big dinner for her, (Copyright, 1930, by T. W. Technique hecomes merely the me- dium for heauty, The applause wag nothing short of clamour---long and sustained; he came back with two Chopin Etudes, a mazurks, a prelude. and the very lovely Dohnanyi Etude, It was not the least part of this man's charm, that, after such an exertion, he should sit down and gragiounly autograph those pros grams with which half & hundred school girls plied him, All who listened will follow his eareer with interest, and since Mieczyslaw Mung is & very young man, it may he, that some day he will lend his great powers to the interpretations of Debussy and the other moderns, No one wants the saloon back, but it wouldn't be half had to tackle some of that one-time free lunch, ~Chicago Evening 'Post, SEH Ks and reveals no strong, vivid person ality, His poetry Is that of the rep- resentative man, It is deeply af focted by his spirit of melancholy and agonized doubt, Arnold look with envy upon the unquestioning confidence of the Carthusian monks rr r---- hl sat Nua LINOLEU The Mind of Matthew Arnold mee niernd Discussed by Professor E.
