Marie Sault Ste. Marie, Ont,, Nov, 11.--A double drowning took place at the Pine 'Island ferry landing, opposite St. Joe Island, 30 miles east of the Sault, Saturday night. Mrs. David Humes, aged 49, wife of a prosper- ous farmer on the island, and John Humes, aged 73, uncle of David Humes, lost their lives. The couple were occupants of an auto driven by David Humes, in which was also Ethel Humes, aged 12, daughter of the dead woman. The four were returning from the Sault market to their; home, two miles from the ferry dock, in a closed car. David Humes, prostrated by the trag- edy, is unable to give a coherent ac- count of the accident, except to say that in some unaccountable way the car went over the ferry approach into six feet of water. SOUTH UKRAINIANSIN ~~ GALICIA PROTEST) League of Nations Asked to, Intervene Against Vienna, Austria, Nov. 11. -- The United National Ukrainian Associa- tions, at a meeting adopted a resolu- tion addressed to the League of Na- tions and the International Red Cross, protesting against alleged acts of terrorism by Polish forc¢es in East- ern Galicia. The resolution asserted that thou- sands of Ukrainians were ' credibly reported to be dying lingering deaths or suffering from lashings inflicted by Polish lancers and foot soldiers, carrying on a campaign of repres< sion. In some cases, the resolution said, blows up to 500 had been in- flicted on peasants who had long fainted from pain. Within the past few weeks, the resolution claimed, homes had been razzed in 700 villages in the districts of Arnopol, Buczacz, Sokol, Podhajce, Horody, Slawyczi and Gaje, in East- ern Galicia. Peasants were reported te be begging by the roadsides, The repression, it was said, was due to Polish allegations that the Uk- rainian and Ruthenian peasants were unruly, and had sometimes set fire to the property of Poles, ~ Bond Street, "Wet.
