(Nov, 4-7-12-14-18-21-25-28) FLIGHT BOOST T0 LIGHT PLANES Kingsford-Smith Subjected Standard Ship to Severe Endurance Test London.--Regular high speed air mail and passenger services right across the world between London and Australia are brought appreci- ably nearer realization by Wing Commander Kingsford-Smith's feat in flying from London to Port Dar- win, Australia, inside 10 days. Never previously have modern light aircraft proved so conclusive- ly in two consecutive weeks their ability to cover the longest possible journeys at a rate unapproached by any form of land or water trans- port. - Recently Mr. Caspareuthus, a Soutg African, improved on all earlier journeys by flying from Eng- land to Cape Town in wine days, his vehicle being a standawnd light Brit- ish monoplane. Now Kingsford. Smith, flying a standard sports light biplane which can be bought in Great Britain for approximately $4,000 has trimmed the Jondon- Australia journey to less than 10 days and Flight Lieutenant Hill, piloting the cheapest machine of the three, was only prayented by bad luck in craghing at his last take-off from surpassing all earlier flights. Once again the acid test of long distance flying in all kinds of wea- ther and over most sorts of terrain which an airman can meet in world travel has proved the supremacy of the British light aeroplane and low powersd aero engine. Hill's and Kingsford-#m,th's machines were craft that any air enthusiast can buy "over the counter," the only important alteration from standard being the placing of extra fuel tanks in the wassenger's cock- pit to enable the pot to fly un- usually long distances without alighting to refuel. Much hag been said about the fa- tigue incidental to long flights of this kind. Undoubtedly the flights are tremendous tests of endurance, but a moment's thought will prove that the aeroplane is probably the only vehicle in existence comfort- able enough for long distance "lone" touring of this kind. Driv- ing a motor car or a motor boat for 12 hours or more a day during 10 or more consecutive days would be an ordeal far surpassing that borne by the Australian flyers, The mod- ern light aeroplane flies itself for long periods in decent weather con- ditions; progress is generally smooth and unexacting compared with the strain of piloting centinu- ously any land or water vehicle; the air is clear, dustless and unpollut- ed. SUNDAY SERVICES | AT COURTICE WERE LARGELY ATTENDED Evening Service in Charge of Women's Missionary Society Sunday were fine. The Pastor, Rev. H. C. Wolfram, preached an excell- ent sermon at the morning service on "A Good Word for Poor Thomas." The Sunday School session in the afternoon had a good uttendance. The weather was all that one could wish and a large crowd astembled to listen to Mrs. Dr. Care scallen of Whitby Ladies' College, who gave a most interesting and in- spiring address, speaking of the mis- sionary work in a general way and aiso of the work in China where Dr. and Mrs. Carscallen were missionari- es for twenty years.
