PAGE SIX THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1930 PETERBORO JRS.LOSES.P.A. GAME-TORONTO LEAFS FINALLY BEATEN Peterboro, St. John's and Barrie Eliminated in Last Night's Jr. S.P.A. Games Galt Kids Put Peterboro St. |. John's Out by Score of 4-2 --Brantford Team Proves Too Good for Barrie, 5-1 --Many Promising Play- ers Seen in Action in Last "Night's Game Toronto, Nov. 26.--Unworried by the importance of onerous de- fensive tactics, four out-of-town teams hurled everything they had into enthusiastic offensive play last night at the Arena Gardens and provided as interesting games as have been witnessed this Fall in the S.P.A. junior series. Galt, with their 4 to 2 victory over Peterboro St. John's in the open- ing game, and Brantford, with their 5 to 1 win from Barrie, were the survivors in two torrid tussles of pre-season efforts. As has been the case with most teams this season there was a noticeable lack of condition on the part of the losers but all four teams took every advantage offered of making the best of the early encounters to improve themselves for the grind that faces them when the O. H.A. regular season gets under way. Two Promising Teams Both Peterboro and Galt have teams that have many players of merit, but since the former had been on the ice only once this sea- son they were not expected to give as finished a display as their op- ponents. Galt's two front line shifts are already showing the benefits of artificial ice and early practices and these men, backed by a sturdy defence pair in Cas- sidy and Ainslee and a capable net minder in McGregor provided too strong a combination for Peter- boro to successfully cope wit! However, had matters been equ in condition, the game would un- doubtedly have been closer, White and Howe, defence pair for the losers backed their buddies with bodychecks and stemmed manv Galt rushes before they could be termed dangerous, Caladine and Devere, centre players for Peterboro and Galt respectively, organized many shifty thrusts at their opponents' goal Wesley, who stepped into the Peterboro nets in the third session, turned back many attacks both from close in and from outside the defence with his timely stops. Cas- sidy, while he was prominent on the Galt defence, was equally as Ye CAREW LUMBER (© '4 ATHOL r Ww >HAWA | aggregation of hockey talent, | real effective on 'the attack. Bryan, Gates and Scott, who took turns on the Galt forward squad, all turned in fine efforts, Brantford's All-round Strength Collie and Nels Kipp. the de- fence for Brantford plugged the play passages of the Barrie squad and the former's starting front rank of Cook, McBride and K. Kipp supplied a steady offensive pressure and a reliable back- checking unit to keep the Barrie men in check, The regular Brant- ford forwards secured all the goals but they were capably relieved by alternates. For 15 minutes the teams bat- tled without scoring but Brantford took a two-goal lead before the period ended. Ken Kipp opened the counting when he scored on Isaacs' | pass and Cook took McBride's as- sist for the second. Cook's single- handed goal was the only tally in the second session but in the third two goals by K. Kipp, the first alone and the second on a pass from N. Kipp, greatly increased the winners' margin, Nichols's ef- fort in the final minute of play prevented Barrie from going home goalless, Maroons Out-Play Rangers lontreal Nov. 26 (CP) Showing that, the men having play- ed themselves in, they have a great Mont. YELLOW JACKETS FINALLY BREAK THEIR LOSING STREAK---TIE Pittsburgh, Pa, Nov. 26--The Pit- tsburgh Yellow Jackets of the Inter- natiomal Hockey League broke ther losing streak last night even thought they didn't win. They played a 4 to 4 deadlock with Windsor, an overtime period failing to shatter the tie, Pitts- burgh has lost four games and won none. I'he tams concluded the first period tied at two-all, Both teams battled viciously during the second 20-min- ute ordeal and with only ten seconds remaining to be played the Bulldogs broke the tie, Phillips lifting the puck through Cox at close range after tak- ing a pass. from Northcott. Not only was it the first defeat for the leaders of the Canadian division, but it marked the first time this season they had heen scored on. The Quakers, show= ing surprise strength eompletely outplayed the Leafs, except in the late moments of the third period, when the Toronto team desperate- ly tried to tie the score, After several close cails, the Quakers broke through in the first period when Hib Milks, playing de- fence instead of centre, soloed through the Leafs and slipped the puck under Grant's feet, Eleven seconds before the end of the period the Leafs tied the score on a break.
