CHURCHES OBSERVE CHRISTMAS SUNDAY, (Continued from page 2 fter all ATIStmas was, a a reng and that 1c most impor self to Jesus estival above all else, gilts, tl s lu give one's aking of irge part of the service, the church was beautifully corated, a gle aming white star being over the « symbolical of the nanger at Bethleh ent. To open thi part of the Legend of in of the Archie em, "Our y Jamieson J. « Y our n nda School, took « hildrer which cl de- adie, service, "The was recited by and another " was recited | } The representatives of the va- rious departments then came for- ward, and with recitatlon, song, and story, | made their contributions to the King. Mrs. Grant Berry represented the Cradle Roll department. The be- ginners sang a delightful little hymn n a body, under the Mrs. J. C. Young, their gifts being presented by Joan Cuthbertson and Barbara Davis. Mona Gregg and Hugh Mcintyre were the representa: tives of the Primary Department, and Harold Calford and George Whitelaw, after reciting appropriate verses, pre- sented the gifts of the juniors. Eunice Lesy and May Clark, on be- half of the niesmedisles, and Frank Britton' and Gerald Tonkin, for the seniors, came forward, recited their verses, and laid their offerings in the cradle: Muriel Haines recited the beautiful "Legend of St. Christopher," following which the gifts of the adult Bible class and the Young People's Society were brought forward respec- tively by William Kirkwood and Helen Yule The children all performed splen- didly in the roles assigned to them, and their verses and stories were all highly appropriate to the occasion of a White Gift Service. The anthem, "O, Holy Night," with Mrs. Grant Derry taking the solo part, was beautifully sung by the choir, The service was a largely at- tended one, every part of the church being filled, with the children occupy- ing a section of the centre of the au- ditorium, The morning service was also of a special Christmas character, the theme of the sermon being in keep- ing with the occasion, and the spe- cial music by the choir also being of an appropriate nature, Calvary Baptist Church At Calvary Baptist, Athol street west, Rev. W. I. Roadhouse, sec- retary of the world-wide Evangeli- zation Crusade, gave two addresses pregnant with spiritual prophecy relating to the second coming of Jesus, to rule and reign as King. Mr. Roadhouse {8 a well-known student of this subject and while not in sympathy with any attempt at formulating an exact chronologi- cal program or setting of dates. be. lleves the scriptures teach clearly that Christ is coming again as surely as he camg the first time as the babe of Bethlehem. The choir, under the leadership leadership of | Christmas anthems. In the morn- ing the selection was: "Glory to God in the Highest" (Lane); and at the evening service, "Great King of Kings" (Gabriel). STRAUSS HINDERED BY LACK OF FUNDS Vienna, Austria, Dec. 22--Richard Strauss, the Austrian composer and conductor, who recently stated that owing to reduced fees he would not conduct any longer in Germany, is now said to be disappointed by the Vienna State Opera, which was to produce his favorite opera, "The Woman Without a Shadow," but will probably be unable to do so because of the lack of funds. His agreement with the Opera will expire next March, and so far no steps have been taken by either side to renew it. During the last four years Strauss has conducted a number of opera per- formances in Vienna, chiefly of his own works, between December and April. In lieu of fees the Govern- ment has granted him a beautiful building plot for bis Vienna resid- ence. An American company is building a bridge to connect Canton, China, with its main suburb on the island of Honan. FIELDS KNOCKS OUT LAWLESS IN FIFTH Detroit, Dec, 20.--Jackie Fields. former welterweight champion, knocked out Bucky Lawless of Syracuse, N.Y., in the fifth round of a scheduld ten-round bout at Olympia Arena last night, Fields, showing vast improve- ment over his appearance here last Winter, when he lost his crown to Young Jack Thompson, was the aggressor throughout and baa Lawless holding on for the last two rounds. BULLDOGS DEFEAT LEADING HERD 3-2 Windsor, Dec, 20, -- Windsor Bulldogs are still in second place in the International League stand- ing, but they are one game up in their series with the pace-setting Buffalo Bisons as a result of stop- ping the Roach aggregation here last night, 3-2.
