It was at rst reported that it was possible for digers to overrun the seashore and scoop diamonds up in buckets, but lice soon put an end to talk of this nd by appearing on the shore in large force to prevent any illicit dig. ng. One of the disappointed diggers told a newspaper correspondent here that while he was at the Namaqua- land seashore some illicit operations were being conducted at night, but there were 300 police to about 70 diggers where he was and the latfer eould not do anything, This man de- scribed how illegal digging was re. sorted to on the seashore, Half-naked diggers, he said, buried themselves in the sand during the day, allowing only their heads to be above the ground, They secreted themselves under bushes, and at night left their hiding places and se. cured the goods, In some cases they would be out for two or three nights in succession, subsisting only on bil. tong. The Government issued a warn- ing to diggers to keep away from the sup sed Eldorado as follows: Pith reference to the sensational statements published in the Press as to the existence of large quantities of diamonds in the sea off the coast of Namaqualand, the Government desires to warn diggers that these statements are entirely false and calculated to mislead people to proceed to Nama- qualand, through difficult and inlos- pitable country, only to find that when they get there they are faced with great hardships and no means of livelihood, The Government has rohjbited all prospecting on Crown and north of Port Nelloth and on Visit Tur "tore AND SEE OUR LINE The Fashion hoppe 84 SIMCOR BT, 8.
