As yet, however, the book has not seen the printers' presses, for Ev- an Evans must first complete his passage to England, change his clothes for those without a smell of cattle, and then sit down and pen his experiences. Evan Evans is a fair-haired, rosy-cheeked Welshman. He has sailed from Saint John as a cattle hand on the 8.8. Manchester, bound for Manchester, with money in his pocket. Money was in his pocket too, when he left Calgary for Saint John. However, he did not wish to part with his dollars earned: by hard work in the west--and so his study of scientific "bumming" was begun. The Effective Way What is the most effective way to seek a free meal while hobo-ing by rail? Evan Evans knows. He bases his theory on behaviourism, psychology or what-not. His al- ma mater is the School of Hara Knocks. "Just go to the train engineers rooms and ask if you may have a wash there," says Evan Evans. "While you are washing the en- gineers will have a tendency to ga- ther around and inquire about your travels. After talking a couple of minutes, casually men. tion that you have not caten for two days. The men will be only too glad to give you all the food you can take in." The Second Lesson Now for Lesson Two. Never ride the bumpers on a freight tran he advises would-be bums. for ft is much more comfortable to be on the engine's coal tender. Some railways have these steam.heated now and the hoboes are according- ly grateful. Furthermore, don't "hop" a train until it gets under way because if your arrival on board is premature, the rallway men see to it that your departure follows just as suddenly, by the helpful propulsion of sev- eral No. 12 size feet. When the train is picking up speed the railway employees would rather keep you' as a passenger than bother with the trouble and expense of stopping the train and ejecting you, Evan Evans contin. ues. Quite as would be expected, the tramp meets opposition when he walks in to a freight yard to look for the de luxe, accommodation of a heated tender, but.there are al: ways methods of wriggling out of trouble. When Evan Evans sees a policeman watching him he does not begin to walk quickly away. On the contrary, he accosts the arm of the law in a friendly man- ner, Method of Approach "Sir," says Evans politely, "would you direct me to the road from hore leading out of town?" The policeman is willing to aid in getting rid of superfluous ho- boes, and he complies with the re- yuest. Then Evan Evans goes away till the constable strolls off to some other part of his beat. The cheery Welshman found the art of arguing with a merchant about prices to be quite a study. Often--with a $25 bill in his pock- ot--he obtained things cheaply by paying in pennies produced from half a dozen pockets of his cloth- ing. A kind-hearted dealer would pity the Wanderer and throw in something else. That is how he got the big fold- ed black cap he was wearing when he took passage on the Manches- ter Producer, Now Evan Evans 1s on the high seas, his days of bum. ming over, en route back to his sweetheart and one of his four trades--farmer, motor mechanic, town fireman or motion picture machine operator. St. John, N.B., Sells Fire Brigade Horses Saint John, N.B.--Stepping "out of the city's harness to make way for motor cquipment, four of Saint John's best known fire horses were auctioned off a few days ago. They were Barneygand Dan, a pair of mat- ched blacks, which had hauled the Steam engine at number one station for 'eleven. years, Joe, with fourteen years service, and Fred with five. | TIME TABLE | CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAYS active 1930 (Standard Time) except Sumfay. - : except Sunday, except Saturday, Noon on Fei] m. Mass, = Another "slau. ghter year"--the worst in the his- tory of Massachusetts -- during | more The report, although still in- complete, reveals an increase of than two per cent. in the number of automobile fatalities during the fiscal year ending No- vember 3, 1930, as compared with | the number of deaths during the previous year, when 777 persons were killed on the highways. Many persons struck by cars during the year are still in danger of death, and the present total of fatalities may be increased. Figures now being compiled al- so disclose a startling increase in the number of hit-and-run drivers. The report will show that the av- erage number of drunken-driving cases reached 100 a week and to- talled more than 5,000 for the year. Many of the fatalities were cauged by hit-and-run intoxicated drivers, Several deaths resulted from drivers falling asleep. Despite the fact that the total number of fatalities was higher in 1930 than any year since the ad- vent of the automobile, the number of pedestrians killed was lower than in 1929. During the fiscal year of 1929, 441 pedestrians were killed by motor cars, while last year the number decreased to 430. The number of motorists killed in accidents during the past year, 322, was higher than that for 1929. Forty-three others who died were riding bicycles or other types of vehicles. More children between the ages of 5 and 6 were killed than any other class, The number of elder- ly victims between the ages of 55 and 70 was the next highest on the list. : "The most unfortunate month last year was November, with 98 deaths, three more than the pre- vious record total of 95 during August, 1929. February had the lowest num- ber of fatalities, 41.. The lowest figure for 1929, also occurring in February, was 29, J. H. R.
