If thers 14 a fifeplace, the projection of the chimney leaves shallow recesses on either side where bookcases seem par- ticularly appropriatei. Bookcases can also be advantageously placed on either side of a door or win- dow or used to balance a door or window on the same wall, If the Ibrary is large, they can he made to cover the entire end of one wall, They can be attractively placed under a high window or in a par- row wall space. One of the great- est decoratiyo advantages of books is that they fit Into narrow spaces. An attractive bookshelf can often be placed between two windows or between a window and a door where no other decoration Is pos- sible. The helght of the shelvse beside the fireplace will be determined by the mantel or: moulding, If the mantle is of medium height, it Is best to make the shelves even with it or else to bulld them all the way to the ceiling, If the shelves start from the floor, the first shelf should be four or six inches up to protect the hooks from dust, Shelves should be about nine inches apart for ordinary books, and more for dictionaries, atlases, and the larger special edi- tions. Adjustablé shelves are a nroat advantage and ean easily be arranged for by making holes at one inch intervals in the side sup- ports and using ° metal pegs to iold the shelves, * UTILITIES POWER CORP. WELL ABLE 10 EXTEND PLANT (Continued from page 4) distribution system, this is the re- search service which will be behind it in its improvement and develop ment. Away up town 1 saw another of the big things of Utilities Power and Light operations, a mammoth gas holder, built a year or two ago at a cost of $1,000,000, and cap able of storing 10,000,000 cup feet of gas. Ii was a huge affair, with five lifts, rising high into the air, but so great in circumference that it seemed to be less tall than it really was. Alongside of it was a pumping station, and here, to poration plans things, the pumping station had been built in residential style of architecture, ot rug brick, to comform with the character of the surrounding residential area. Down to the centre of the city again, I visited Station "G", where I saw another pumping station in operation, with two mrge holders, each with a capacity of 5,000,000 oublo feet. These stations are dot. ted all over the city, and are so situated that should the pressure at the manuissivetag niewts drop, they can be put into operation, one after the other, to maintain the pressure over the entire system, Same System For Oshawa As Mr. Rasmussen explained ft to me, the same system of operation would be necessary in a gas distri bution system along the Lake On- tario Shore, with the manufacturing plant at Oshawa and large holders and pumping stations at strategic points Mong the pipe line, so that there would be a certainty of an even pressure throughout the en- tire system. , This ended my travels for to-day. It has provided many interesting ntudies. It has convinced me, at least, that the Utilities Power und Light Corporation has at its dis: posal all the facilities necessary to ensure economical gas production, and that when it enters a communi- ty, it does things in a big way, and is ready and able to spend money to make new developments in ac cordance with the needs of the area being served, : * Another interesting point that I learned to-day is that the entire construction work of the Utilities Power and Light Corporation Ia done hy one of its own subsidiary companies, under its own enginoer. Mr. Rasmussen, I learned, was one of the engineers of this company, and he is looking forward with ex- pectancy to the possibility that he may be sent to Oshawa to take over the direction of the construction activities here. He also reiterated that it was the policy of the cor- poration to always use loeal labor for' everything except the hetusl en- gineering and direction of the work Wn local plants, Just another few words. The Laclede Gas Light Company, Limit. od. "like the parent company in Chi. cago; owns its own huldings in St. Louis, and occupies the whole of it, It is a twelve-storey building, cov- ering almost an entire city block, and the ground floor is occupied hy & spacious show room, exhibiting hundreds of types of gns and 'eles trical appliances, for the company also supplies St. Louis with its elec. trie light and power, Gas Rates As a result of the methods of operation used here, the gas rates are exceptionally low. Without go ing into a detailed analysis of them, the cost for domestic and commer celal gas ranges from 60 to 96 cents per 1000 cubie feet, with no mer. vice charge, according to donsump- toll, and with a baile rate of 75 cents per 1000 ocuble' feet. For heating purposes, the initial charge is based on the size of the building, with a charge of 46 cents for each 1000 cuble feet of building volume, this charge including a supply of 600 eubly feet of gas for each 100 cublo feet. The secondary charge provides that tor i%+ ""5t 20,000 cuble feet in excess of that allowea for in the initial charge, the rate shall be 75 cents per 1000 cubje feet, while all in excess of that is at the rate of 60 cents per 1000 edbla feet. Industrial gas rates vary from 60 cents to 75 cents per 1000 cuble feet consumption charge, ae: cording to the consumption, with a demand charge based on the peak load for any half hour, and arrange ed on a sliding scale, Such rates are, of course, made possible by the large consumption and by the econ. omical methods of production which are possible under modern gas-making methods. To-morrow, although it is Bun- day, the gas plants will be in full operation, fo 1 will be over in Gran ite City, 111, looking over a blast furnace and coking plant, in which one of the by-products is the elec trical power with which St. Louis Is supplied. On Monday, 1 will have a run on one of the company's railroads over to Mount Olive, to see one of the company's coal mines in operation, and am looking for. ward to a trip for two miles along the coal workings far under the earth. i All of this shows the type of cot poration which is seeking to buy and operate the Oshawa gas plant and distributon system, and should be useful In helping the voters of Oshawa to form their own conglu- sions as to what the coming of such 8 company to Oshawa might ulti- mately mean to the eity.
