It is prob- able that Dr. Johnson knew the in- side of these famous sale-rooms; cer- tainly Lord Chesterfield did, for he rode there in State. in order to. give his friend, James Christie, the benefit of such an advertisement, James Christie started as a book auctioneer, and numbered among his intimate friends David' Garrick, Rey- nolds and Gainsborough. Christie was called upon to sell off Garrick's af- fects, From his auction rostrum he told with emotion how the great ac- tor upon hearing on one occasion that he (Christie) had lost $100,000 by becoming security for a minor, rushed around to aid him with a loan of $50,000, The Dickens sale in 1870 was an- other notable auction, and then came those of the Prince Napoleon's art collection, Landseer's pictures, Glad- stone's fine collection of Wedgewood, and the Duke of Marlborough's gems and cameos. Erected 60 years ago this great build- ing on Muswell Hill, one of the nor- thern heights of London, has endur- ed many vicissitudes. Like its half- sister the Crystal Palace, it strug- gled hard for years to secure public favor by offering a judiicous blend of amusement with instruction. The London Public,' however, were even more neglectful of the fare provided at the Alexandra Palace than thev were of the attractions of the Crystal Palace, and for many years the Pal- ace itseli was closed. During the Great War the Palace had patrons in abundance from two kinds of en- torced holiday makers. Firstly it was used for the accommodation of Bel- gian refugees, and after wards it was turned into an internment camp for enemy aliens. When the air-raids hecame particularly virulent it was frequently suggested that the Pal- ace--crowded as it was with our en- emies' nationals--should be brilliant- ly lighted and thus make a fine mark for enemy aircraft. The organ ia the great hall was re- cently restored, btu it cannot be used to its full power for fear that the roof may fall upon it. The Government is willing to con- tribute a substantial sum towards the wages bill of a general renovation scheme which, it is estimated, would employ 600 men for six months. Lo- cal authorities of London, Middlesex and Essex, it is hoped, will supply the balance. spp dma ---- FIRST NORMAN ABBEY LOCATED .| Excavators Uncover Church at Westminster Built by the Confessor London, March 21.--The church built at Westminster by Edward the Confessor, who dled in 1066, OLD CHRISTIE'S Alec Martin Has Wealth of Lore Garnered in Famous Auction Rooms London, March 21--(By Thos. 1 Champion, Canadian Press Staff Cor- respondent) -- Alec Martin has just become a partner in the famous firm of Christie's auctioneers of art trea- sures, whose history goes back over a century and a half. Thirty-five years ago Mr. Martin worked for the firm as an errand boy, but only serv- ed them, in those days during the sea son of the sale. At last he was taken in permanently as a clerk and devot- ed himself to the valuation of pic- tures. "I remember the time when Land- seer pictures and Meissomer prints fetched tremendous prices, said Mr. Martin, "Now, nobody wants them. Pictures have their fashion like ev- erything else, but I feel that quality in art will be justified in the long run, and that people who take the trouble to collect a few works of real merit are bound to profit in the dou: vas the first in the Norman style to be erected in England, und re- gent excavations in the peighbor- [hood of the Unknown Warrior's [Tomb have hrought Interesting fragments of it to light. These | consist of the plinth courses of the | south acrade of the Norman nave which was pulled down about 1375 when the existing fabric was be- gun. The discoveries include the low- er courses of the great northeast pler of the Norman southwest tower, and as the position +f the old transept is already established, the old problem of the length of the earlier nave ig solved; it was about 214 feet. So far tho remains of one deuble bay have heed found and they comprise the tower pier, a smaller intermediate illar, and a big composite pier, slightly less, of course, than that of the tower.
