THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, THURSDAY, APRIL 9, 1931 PAGE SEVEN To places that we hold as dear. --=Mrs. Yellow Wing Mrs, Yellow Wing the Flicker had been moving up from the Sun- ny South in a leisurely manner.' She had spent a very comfortable winter and now she was headed toward home. At first she was in no hurry, but as she got nearer to the Green Forest, the Green Meadows, the Old Orchard and the Laughing Brook she began to hurry a bit. The nearer she got the more impatient she became, Yel- low Wings had gone on ahead and she knew that he must have reach- ed home several days ago. At last, very early one morning, she reached the farm south of Farmer Brown's farm and stopped to look for breakfast, She was \ ReDROSE TEA KZ CWOICE BLENDS = Red Lael & Orange Pekoe busy catching ants when she heard a sound that caused her to lift her head and listen intently, It was a distant rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat. it ended and Mrs, Yellow Wing bobbed her head. "That's Yellow Wing," sald she most decidedly. "That's Yellow Wing, I would know his drumming anywhere. There is no one like him for drum- ming. I wish he would drum again." As if In answer to that wish the drumming began again. It was a long double call, She put her head on one side, the better to lis- ten. Even at that distance she could tell that the drummer was putting all there was in him into his drumming. "He is drumming for the joy of it," said she, "I can always tell by the sound of his drumming just how he is feeling, and just now he is mightily pleased about something, He must have found a new drum, That's it, a new drum and the best sounding one I ever have heard. That is why he is so pleased. I wonder where that drum is. My. but it is good sound- ing I wonder if he is drumming for me or just for his own pleasure." Then another thought popped into her head and it wasn't a plea- sant one! Could it be that some other Flicker had arrived ahead of her and that Yellow Wing was drumming for the benefit of a stranger? The mere thought made Mrs. Yellow Wing jealous. Yes, sir, it did just that thing. It tak- og very little to make some people jealous. Almost always it is their own thoughts, that are the cause. Right away Mrs. Yellow Wing forgot she hadn't finished break- fast. "It is high time I reached home," said she, "Yes, sid, it 1s high time I reached home. I have ought not to be ag happy as all that without me there. If he is drumming to some one else I'll have something to say about it. I will, indeed. He has no busi- ness to be drumming to anybody but me, There is too much joy in that drumming of his. It doesn't sound as if he is lonesome, and it ought to.. If there is another Flic- ker making eyes at him she'll hear from me. Indeed she willl The idea of Yellow Wing daring to drum to any one but me!" With this she took to her wings and headed straight for Farmer Brown's. As she drew near she took care to keep out of sight as much as possible. She flew from tree to tree, keeping behind the trunk of each and peering around it in all directions. She wasn't looking for Yellow Wing. She knew by his drumming that he wag over back of Farmer Brown's house. She was looking for some other Flicker to whom he might be drumming. She was jealous, was Mrs, Yellow Wing, and grow- ing more jalous every minute, So she reached the Old Orch- ard, She went througlL every tree in it. No rival did she find, for no rival was there She flew to the Green Forest and went all along the edge of it and a little way into it, peeking and peering and finding no ome. Still she wasn't satisfied. Jealously dies hard. "No, sir," she sai& over and over to herself, "he wouldn't drum like that if he didn't know there is some one to listen. I'll find out who it is and I won't let him know I have arrived until I do." Foolish Mrs. Yellow Wing. But Jealous people always are foolish.
