THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 1931" PAGE THIRTEEN New Models Are On Display In Local Show Rooms: Chrysler Multi .Range Four Speed Transmission Has Dual High Gears Provide Maximum Power And Driving Pleasure on Most Crowded City Streets --Developed by Chrysler Engineering Staff The Chrysler Eight and the Im- perial Eight are equipped with dual high four-speed transmissions to provide maximum power and driv- ing pleasure on the most crowded city thoroughfares and for climb- ing roads of mountain steepness, on the one hand--and for the high- est rate of speed obtainable on lev- el stretches of road, on the other. What depended formerly upon dif- ferent gear' ratios for flat and for mountainous regions has been taken care 0f by Chrysler in this four- speed ' transmission with its two high gears. ; Developed by the Chrysler en- gineering staff, after long experi- mentation, this trans-mission has become one of the outstanding ac- hievements in motor car improve- ment of the last decade. A super- flexibility of performance is assur- ed by four forward speeds. First there is a heavy-duty gear which is |. used only when the car is in need of all the power at its command to pull out of mud-holes, snow-drifts, or deep sand. The second gear is the normal starting gear and operates like tha first gear of a conventional three- speed transmission. Third gear is the first of the dual-highs. It is used principally for sprints in traffic and for speedy hill-climbing. It is silent like any other high gear. The fourth, or other high gear, is used on the 'open road but also can be used in the city when traffic is not bothersome. There is a proper time and place to use each of these "highs." If the driver selects one for heavy traflic and hilly going and the o'her for high-speed straight- away travel, he will experience the greatest thrill that comes from the results of this dual high four-speed Chrysler transmission. By use of the Traffic-high, with fits instant pick-up, it is possible to go from the outskirts of a big city or a suburban home to a downtown office with the least delay on con- gested thoroughfares. This is the gear that seems to give the car wings on the getaway when the lights change. The other high gear delivers maximum car speed at slower engine speeds and with greater fuel economy. , To obtain the greatest .exibility from the operation of the Chrysler Bigh transmission it is said that the fourth; or top-high gear; should not | Be used except when the car is tra- Yyeling at a fair rate of speed with lenty of momentum. In fact, as ong as flexibility and frequent Shanse of pace are necessary there is no reason to shift out of third gear, or intermediate high. The fourth gear will do its work best af- ter the tractive effort of gaining momentum has heen spent and the r is ready to roll along on the level with effortless swiftness. When approaching a hill or a pull of any kind requiring power, or when entering a congested traffic district 'demanding flexibility, the shift should be made from fourth to third. The shift can be made with- put noise or effort at any speed. The First Straw Hat Smith's Falls.--W, GG. DAVIDSON MOTOR COMPANY GROWING WITH COUNTY TOWN Chrysler and Dodge Truck Dealers Do Large Business Keeping pace with Whitby's growth in the past few years, the Davidson Motor Company today have a very extensive business and modern garage and serice station, located on Dundas Street East. Re- cently: plans 'were prepared for the extention of the building, an abso-| lutely necessary step if the expan- sion of the business is to be taken care of. The Davidson Motor Company sell and service Chrysler automobiles, also Dodge trucks, Their volume of sales has grown from year to year until at the present time they are listed among the very active salesmen of these well known pro- ducts. Their garage, employing con- siderable local labor, is modern in every respect, and they carry a full line of auto accessories. Their slo- gan, "Four Service Men," means just exactly what it says. President Willlam Davidson is a member of the Town Council, this vear chairman of Streets, and takes a great deal of interest in civic af- fairs. The secretary-treasurer, Don, Wilson, is one of the county town's moet progressive young business men, he takes an active interest in the work in the Whitby Chamber of Commerce. During the three years the Mc- Laughlin-Buick Straight Eight En- gine was under development it was realized that this new motor was capable of such high speeds that to assure long life to the mo- tor it would be necessary to eveive some method that would improve the lubricating system beyond any- thing previously known in stand- ard motor construction, For many years oil coolers have been. used on racing cars, but an oil temperature regulator of the type now offered on the new Me- Laughlin-Buick Eight, had never been presented to the motoring public, Intensive research evolved =a very simple solution to the prob- lem of maintaining the oil at ef- fective lubricating temperatures. The engineers installed on the new Straight Light a small compact regulator that is made up of a geries of cores, similar in princi ple to the radiator. All the cool- ing water from the main radiator to the engine block passes through these tubes, while the oil for the bearings passes around the tubes. As a result the regulator acts as an oil heater in winter, warm- ing the oil quickly to an easy flow- ing consistency and in summer it functions as a cooler holding the temperature of the oil down to the temperature of the water, With this effective installation the new McLaughlin-Buick Straight Eight is capable of sustained high speeds without undue wear on the engine, But of equal Importance to the oil temperature regulator is the new carburetor intake silencer. This feature has met with the gen- eral approval of the automotive industry. Before the advent of this silen- cer, elght-cylinder motors had the objectionable feature of emitting a low frequency moaning or roac- ing sound which became increas- ingly loud at the wide open throt- tle. It was discovered that thls sound came from the carburetor inlet. Tracing it down, it was found that the noise started in the engine cylinder, passed out through the inlet valve, down through the induction system, and out through the carburetor air horn, The McLaughlin-Buick Engin eers, co-operating with the staffs of General Motors Research and the AC Spark Plug Company, made an intensive study of this problem and solved it with 'the compact silencer. Swimming Season Opens Port Hope. -- Youthful school boys opened the local swimming season some few days ago, and with a goodly number, a dip in Beamish's Pond at the File Face tory Bridge became almost a daily occurrence. They report the wa= ter thoroughly enjoyable, but the average citizen will awalt a more seasonable time for the initial swim of the year. 1931 WILLYS LINE MEETS DEMANDS OF MODERN MOTORING * Willys Sixes and Eights Have | Ample Power and Speed Development * Demands of the current era of motoring differ widely from the demand as well as expectations of a few years ago. All car owners recall that not long since they were satisfied with cars tbat had cruis- ing, or steadily drivable speed well below 60 miles an hour, while all that they required in the matter of power was an engine that would enable them to climb hills in thelr respective territories. These 'demands of a few ycars ago, however, have changed and the car manufacturer who fails to recognize this and huild according to the demands of the modern buyer, will quickly find a sales re- sistance difficult to overcome. In the development of the Wil- lys sixes and eights and the Willys- Knight six, engineers of Willys- Overland designed their products, not only to meet the current de- mand but to provide cars that would algo meet future needs. The Willys Eight is driven by an engine that develops $0 horsepow- er is another example of meeting every demand of modern motoring and in its new low price range makes superior eight cylin ler per- formance available to a wider fleld of buyers. The Willys Fight, whizh {s built in two models--The Deluxe Sedan and Victoria--has a high speed of better than 75 miles an hour apd will easily do 50 miles per hour in second gear. In the 1931 Willys-Knight line, the sleeve valve engine employed is the most powerful ever built by Willys-Overland, carrying with it the traditional advantages of this type of engine. This engine de- velops 87 horsepower and has a an hour and second gear performs ance ample to make it a highly desirable car in congested traffic. While there have been no ma- jor departures in the design of these 1931 power plants. certain refinements and improvements have been incorporated in them which better their former highly satisfactory performance, Not on- ly have they proved thelr ability in heavy city traffic anc off the wide open country highways but in the hilly and mountainous terri- tory where the in-built stamina of an engine is subjected to its most rigorous tests.
