(110d) PLAN BEET FARMS FOR MANITOBA Project to Try Sugar Beet Growing at Emerson Fa. vored by Farmers Emerson, Manitoba, May 11.--~The growing of sugar-beets in this dis- trict is believed to be not only feasible but likely to prove profitable, and a movement toward cxperimenting in this line is under way. At a special Board of Trade meeting here recent- ly the question was discussed at length and addresses were given by men versed in sugar-beet growing. Among these were J. M, Davidson, of the Industrial Development Board, and L, Scott, field instructor for a sugar company at Grand Forks, U.S. Information as to the growing of sugar-beets and all pertaining to the industry was given to the assem- bled farmers and others interested, and the local Board of Trade took steps to forward the movement, It was agreed that a man should be sent out for several days to assist the field man to arrange for the re. maining acreage needed that had not already been acqpired for sugar-beet purposes, and it was understood that 100 acres might be secured for this year's crop, The United Farmers of Manitoba had previously arranged for the ace quiring of 65 acres in the Emerson district for sugar-beet growing, and some of the farmers present at the meeting agreed to take shares in this acreage. . Considerable enthusiasm was shown by the farmers generally when the possibilities of the indus- try 'were canvassed at the meeting. The field instructor for the Grand Forks - sugar Eompany stated that $4.50 per ton would be paid by his company for sugar-beets at Emerson this year. ------------ With reference to the alleged world shortage gold, why not make use of the discarded wedding rings ?
