May 15.--Alas- ka has a new brand of romance-- the romance of the daily routine of an aeroplane pilot. F. G. Coburn, president of the Aviation Corpora- tion, which operates aeroplanes be- tween the towns and cities of Al- aska, describes that routine so as to entrance anyone. Consider a typical cargo. Dyna- mite, carries as freight, canned to- matoes and cans of reserve gaso- line are stowed directly back of the pilot because they are heavy and it is desirable to carry the heaviest objects over the wheeels. Pickaxes and shovels, maybe a gold nuggest or two and passengers are carried too in the same plane. These travel- lers are all congenial. Starting the engine of the aero- plane after being tethered all night to stakes driven into the ground is a good way to test the patience of a most patient man. Elaborate pre- parations are made to melt the lu- bricating ofl which congeals readily when exposed to temperatures of 30 degrees below zero fahrenheit. The pilot keeps # tire extinguisher handy while he thaws the oil. Quick action is necessary when the oil is sufficiently thin to be put into the engine which is started immediately. If this were not done the metal of the engine, cold from the exposure, would congeal the oil and add new burdens to carry. Mr, Coburn relates the experience of a pilot who wished to descend while between destinations, The only likely place he could see was a narrow river with high cliffs. The pilot was dubious of the'wind cur- rents in the gulch and of the con- dition of the ice in the river. He directed his plane earthward. When he was a few hundred feet above the ice he noticed a frantic Eskimo, signalling that the ice was dan- gerous. President Coburn asked the pilot what he decided to do. "Oh, I just moseyed for a hun- dred miles or #0," canually remark- ed the pilot, "and found a good landing place." The Lohman Reindeer Corpora- tion recently sold a herd of rein- deer to the Canadian Government for replensihing the food supplies of the Eskimos of the Canadian Northwest. These animals are being driven across Alaska for delivery to the purchaser, The supplying of food for the heardsmen is a diffi- cult problem made simple by the planes of the aviation corporation, said Mr. Coburn, . Probably the most interestihg as- pect of the whole matter is the pro- found optimism of the latter gen- tleman, He is confident of the fu- ture of aviation as & commencial venture in Alaska because of its time saving poesibilities. The trip from Nome to Anchorage requires 28 days by dog team---and five or six miles by aeroplane. A little girl, whose parents were not great readers visited friends the other day. earnestly at the well-filled book shelves, then amazed us by ex- claiming: "We get books from the library too, but we take ours back. Rd A dramatist wis talking to a cri- tic about himself and his work and his aims and all the rest of it. "I have had," he said, 'a whole crowd of imitators." "Yes,' replied the critic, "'espe- cially beforehand." i SPECIAI | Suits made to | ORDER YOUR 92] | Dominion Clothing Co. | os & i St. W. Phone 2141 | i ht f COAL COAL Phone 193 W.J.
