When arrested by members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Po- lice on Papineau Avenue, Youck had in his taxicab a large-sized parcel containing drugs, it was al- leged. Quizzed by the authorities as to how he had come into pos- session of the opium, the accused declared the parcel was given to him for another Chinese. Involves Sailor The man who gave him the par- cel was a Spanish seaman, whose boat piled the China seas and which came occasionally into Montreal, bringing goods from the Far East, Youck said. He main- tained that he was well acquaint- ed with the Spaniard and that he bad often driven him in his taxi- cab, The latter had given him the parcel a few minutes before the arrest, he claimed. That the Spanish mariner was not a fictitious character, but was well known to other members of the Chinese colony, defence wit- nesses and especially Tom Long, chef, attested. "What did he look like?" Lon, was asked by Gustave Monnette, K.C., prosecuting counsel. "A white man, but dark," explained Long.
