The institute has invested $60,000 in radium, $40,000 of which?' was spent in securing half a gram from New York and the remainder expended in purchasing a supply held by special Winnipeg physi- cians who emloyed it in their pri- vate practice, All the radium in Manitoba now is in the hands of the institute and doctors wishing to secure the precious mineral must obtain their supplies from the organization. Headquarters of the new body are 186 | where two specially prepared safes lined with lead and six inches deep and comprising 4,500 pounds of metal, have been erected to handle the radium, Radium, officials of the insti- tute explained, is not applied di- rectly to the body but emanations from the metal are obtained and methods for handling this gas will be the same as those prevail- ing in the Memorial Hospital, in New York, where more radium is located than in any other insti- tution in the world. In the past few years a method ahs been de- vised whereby these emanations can be distributed to any part of the country and used by medical men with the same benefit as if radium itself were employed. The mechanism which secures the gas from radium pumps it into gold tubing, which is then cut in- to small sections about an eighth of an inch long, containing the substance which it is believed stops cancer growth in the human body. The power of the small sec- tions, known as 'seeds,' is ac- curately checked so that radiation emitted will be correct for the treatment, To prevent harm to those hand- ling radium it was necessary to discover a container that would open and shut automatically, Solu- tion of the problem was found when a radium expert unearthed the idea of using something simi- lar to a sugar container he noticed in a New York restaurant. This device is lined with lead and closes when set down and opens when raised. The newly formed body will bend every, effort to extend its facilities td those suffering from the dreaded cancer growth and to learn something that may fur- ther aid in eradicating the disease. For years formation of a Cancer Relief and Research organization had been urged, the officials state, but not until last year did suffi- cient funds appear to make the move possible, The difficulty was solved when the Manitoba government consent- ed to guarantee the bonds of a cancer institute for $100,000, board appointed from hospitals. medical organizations and the pro- vincial government. The institute must pay interest on the bonds guaranteed by the government and is therefore not a charitable in- stitution, and will be placed on a paying hasis. The only income will be from the sale of radium eman- ations and from the charges made for the use of the radium itself. Indigent patients, however, will be treated free of charge, which means that half the body's work | will be done free gratis. BRITISH PEOPLE FRUIT-EATERS Empire Marketing Board Finds Consumption of Fruit Increasing London, June 6.--British people are rapidly becoming a nation of fruit-eaters, according to the Empire Marketing Board's report on fruit supplies in 1930. "Last year more fruit was eaten in the United Kingdom than in any previous year," states the report, which mentions that the average consumption was 83 pounds for every man and woman | and child. This was an increase of 12% pounds per person over the previous year, A pleasing feature of the re- port is the statement that a higher proportion of the fruit im- | ports was supplied by the Em- | pire last year than previously. Nearly 62 per cent. of apples, 40 | per cent, of the bananas and more than half the peches were Empire-grown. Jamaica is Britain's supplier of bananas, In Great Britain imported nearly 1,600,000 bunches more than ever before, but 1930 surpassed the record. Grape fruit has be- come popular, Consumption last Year was seven times as great as in 1924, Peaches have trebled their sales. Great Britain's fruit bill for imports is about $155, 000,000 a year. Last year this country imported $3,975,000 worth of cut flowers, almost double the amount of six years ago. Dutch bulbs had a record year, and of the imports Holland sent 90 percent. The British im- ported 92,000,000 more Dutch bulbs than in 1929. Spain, France, the Channel Islands, and the Canary Islands last year sent 10,000,000 1b. of onions, potatoes, and tomatoes. largest 1929 A scientist now declares that people with bow legs are always courageous.
