On December 31, 1886, the outside plant consisted of 4,525 miles of poles, 14,506 miles of wire and 50 miles of cable, most of the latter being used to connect Vancouver Island with the mainland. Extension of the lines and the provision for increased traffic was so great that on December 31, 1930, there were 17,718 miles of poles, 172,070 miles of wire, and 324 miles of cable containing 5,505 miles of wire. Cablegrams filed in 1928 numbered 440,539 and cablegrams re- ceived were 383,797, totalling 824,336 in all for the year.
