Brown, Copyright, 1931, by The Associated Press). New York, July 14--Just as we begin to think that physics has sol- ved the millions of mysteries per- taining to matter and energy, we wake up suddenly to the fact that the greatest mysteries of all are staring us in the face. Among these is the enigma of empty space. Prior to the time of the famous Michelson and Morley experiment on ether drag, we were fairly con- tent to fill all empty space with * | tricity, magnestism, and possibly the ether and to define its properties and purposes as fully and accurately as was done for matter itself, The ether very readily absorbed the bur- den of transmitting light, heat, elec- force of gravitation, The evidence of the Michelson and Morley experiment started such a scandal about the ether that the word is almost taboo among scientists and today space is noth- ing more than a mathematical con- ception with little more tangible foothold than the soul of eternity. Even in our solar system the ra- tio between empty space and vol- ume occupied by matter is so great figures are almost meaningless and yet in some manner extraordinary light, heat, electricity, magnetism, and gravitation and matter itself are transmitted throught it. With the hydrogen atom for ex- ample, the empty space as compared with the space occupied by electrons and protons is almost as much lon- ger as is the empty space in the solar system longer than the space filled by the sun and planets. If the inhabitants of London were distributed throughout the solid part of the earth, the space between neo- |; ple would correspond relatively to the empty space between electrons in the atom, But somehow there |', must hg some mechanism in this empty space inside the atam that permits the electrons and protons to maintain their existence, and this mechanism must be just as much a part of reality as are the electrons themselves. Empty greatest challenge before the phy- sicists today. To say that empty space is curved, or finite, or infin- ite, or limitless 1s only to make pos- tulates that sooner or later will re- quire satisfaction with obseryation and experiment. NEW SPECIES OF FUR-BEARING ANIMAL FOUND/ I (By the Canadian Press)) H Vancouver, B.C, July 14.-- Trap- | pers of the Prince George district of British Columbia are genuinely puzzled as to the identity of a small fur bearing animal recently captured by a settler. The annimal is some ways resembled a small beaver. It weighed between eight and ten pounds, but instead of the beaver's | tail it had an appandage like that | of the mink, eight inches long. The length of the animal"'s' body was eighteen inches, and it was cov- ered with a fur of a dark brown color, with a black stripe running down the centre of it's back. To complete its contraditions, it had teeth like the beaver, with front feet semi-webbed and hind . feet fully webbed The settler had no trouble in cap- turing the little animal while it was on land, He decided to take it to Prince George and ask some of his friends what it was; so he put it in a crate and went to Prince George, Nobody was able to help him in identification, however; not ever veteran trappers who claimed per- sonal encounters with gverything from a moose to a field mouse. Letters of description sent to the curator of the provincial museum in Victoria were no more satisfac- tory. Mr, Kermode said that the an- ima] was apparently not unlike cer- tain species of marmot, yet there were some characteristics mentioned that were not to be found in any member of that family. After consulting various gists Mr. Kermode decided that such a strange animal should at once be obtained as the subject for study by scientists and proper cata- loging. Letters were sent to Prince 1 zoolo- WHITBY, OSHAWA, «0.30 p.m. 10.45 p.m. SUNDAY AND "HOLIDAY SCHEDULE Leave Qahawa BUS LINES Week Day Schedule (Effective on and after April 13th, 1931) (Day! it Seving Time) West Arrive Whitby yhrive, 7.20 a.m, .m. 2.15 p.m. m. 6.45 p.m .m. 8.00 p.m, pm. 10.15 p.m. 10.30 p.m 11,30 pm, , 12.15 a.m, Times marked Whitby Hospital Leave Hospital .25 p.m, 15 p.m, n."i10 pom.
