Jolin YLew!s Wynne Bostock, 35, journalist, of Fawn- brake-avenue, Hernehill, S.E., was charged on remand at Bow street Police court récently with steal- ing some Dickens manuscripts, letters and books to the value of $5,600 from the Dickens Trust House Museum, Doughty street. He was now further charged with having, at the same place, committed wilful damage to the extent of $500 by tearing leaves from eight volumes of John For- ster's "Illustrated Life of Char- les. Dickens," and also with steal- ing a Dickens letter valued at $240 from a typewriting office in Thurlow Park-road, Dulwich, The letter in the last case was addressed to Edward Fenn-Jones and was said to be property of Miss Edith B. Jones, Sentence of twelve months' imprisonment was passed. Where Novelist Lived B. Mackay Cloutman, V.C,, prosecuting, said that Bostock was accused of having committed a series of thefts of letters, papers, etc., associated with Char- les Dickens from the house where the famous novelist lived and where "Oliver Twist" was written and "Pickwick Papers" was completed. Bostock first call- ed at the house in April last year. He signed the visitors ,book as "Lewis Wynne," and described himself as a writer of magazine articles. Exceptional facilities were af- forded him to inspect Dickens's books and papers. One of the most important possessions of the trust was the subject of the second chargo--Forster's *Illus- trated Life of Charles Dickens." It was presented to Sir Henry Irving by Toole, the actor, forty years ago. In his frequent visits to the house Bostock obtained access to the work, during the absence of hte secretary, and removed from it at various times scores of autographed letters from such notabilities as Thomas Carlyle, Disraeli, Mrs, Gaskell, Gladstone, Victor Hugo, Alfred Tennyson and others, He also stole first editions of "A Christmas Carol" and "Edwin Drood," and disposed of them to Mr. Myers, a booksell- er, of New Bond-street, and to au autograph, collecting agency. On Way From U.S. Bostock showed Mr. Myers a letter he had received from Sir Henry Dickens, K.C., expressing his appreciation of the interest he had shown in his father's work. In all, forty articles were stolen from the eum. Of these fifteen had been sent to America, twelve of which were now on their way back to this country, In'a written statement to the magistrate Bostock pleaded that his financial position was hope- lessly involved and referred to the . assistance he had given to enable the police to recover most of the stolen articles, It was stated that in 1929 Bostock was sentenced to four ménths' imprisonment for for- gery and fraud committed while he was employed by the London War Pensions Committee, Sir Chartres Biron said that this was a bad case of stealing, over a long period, things not only of intrinsic value but of great historic interest and of national importance. Mr. Cloutman mentioned that Mr. Myers paid the ordinary mar- ket value for the articles pur- chased by him and had not the slightest knowledge that they had been stolen. The trustees wished to express their apprecia- tion of the help received from the police in recovering these ar- ticles. Sir Chartres expressed his thanks to the purchasers in Am- erica for returning the manu. scripts. POPULAR YOUTH 13 LAID TO REST Large Funeral on Monday for Milton Balsdon of Whitby One of the largest funerals wit- nessed in Whitby for some time was that of the late Milton Bald- son, son of Mr. W. H. Baldson, Dundas Street West, held on Monday afternoon. People from the town and countryside com- pletely filled the house and stood around in the lawn as the service was being conducted, everywhere there was in evidence genuine sorrow for the bereaved family, and a desire to pay a last tribute to one who had been popular and useful in the community, The service at the home was conducted by Rev. A. L. Richards, B.D., of Whitby - and Almonds United churches, assisted by Rev. Mr. Blanchard, of Omemee, and Rev. A. M. Irwin, B.D, of Osh- awa. In a brief funeral address Rev. Mr. Richards stated there was the consciousness of a great sorrow at such a time as this, the whole community being shocked at the sudden and early demise of a bright young man. The de- ceased, 'it was recalled, had given very generously to the life of the community, always ready with his fine musical talents to give what he could for the enter- tainment and edification of others. The community was going to miss him, Rev. Mr. Richards stated who asked that he be re- membered as one who had been wholesome and pure, who was splendidly loyal to his family, a great worker, and one deeply in- terested in the work of the church, particularly among young people, Rev, Mr. Richards brought to the bereaved family the Christian consolation of im- mortality and of a better lifs to come, made certain by Christ who was so sure of it that His follow- ers could also be. After the service the casket was borne from the home by in- timate friends; while others car- ried the many beautiful floral tributes. Interment was made in the Groveside cemetery. There were over 60 cars in the funeral procession, so widespread was the sympathy for a family which had been thrice berefet in a very few years, British post office engineers are conducting a series of tests to demonstrate that conversations by radio between England and Japan are feasible, Notice To Creditors In the Estate of James E.
