Russian Products Is EMPIRE FORESTRY BODY IS ALARMED Protested London, July 25.--(C.P). Ca- lle)--""Grave concern" at the "alarming and increasing impor- tation into this country of soft- wood lumber and manufactured timber products from Russia | which are /being sold at such prices as barely represents their cost to British labor for felling, conversion and manufacture' is expressed in a resolution passed at a meeting of the executives of the Empire Forestry Association which has been sent to Premier Ramsay MacDonald. The resolution adds such unre- stricted imports are having the pelfect of restricting the sale of British timbers, both home grown and Empire, curtailing planting nd reforestration, and conse- quently causing more unemploy- ment. The association begs the | Government to take steps to in- | sure that any timber or timber | wroduets imported into Great Brit- tin shall be produced under con- ditions comparable to those per- taining in the Empire, TOURIST TRAVEL INQUEBEC 15 UP T0 FORMER PLAGE Tourists, However, Are! More Careful With Their Money and Are Looking for Bargains Montreal, July 25. -- Tourist travel to Montreal and to the Province of Quebec generally, is only. slightly below the level of former years in numbers, but the average tourist is not spending so much. He is shopping * for bargains, whereas previous to the business depression, he spent without question. Catering to the tourist traffic still continues to be one of the important indus- tries of Quebec, Assurance that the volume of tourist traffic has not shrunk, but has rather increased numerically, wag given by executives of all the tourist and motor organizations in this city. Numbers Even Greater "Quebec has maintained the number of automobile touring parties," said an official in close touch with the traffic, 'and even increased it. However, we find that in most cases people are not staying so long, travelling so far, nor spending so much. They are looking_for accommodation at modérate prices in . place of spending without question, Many summer regorts throughout the province are filled up and booked solidly for the rest of the season. Compared with other places, Que- bec has little to complain of." Change In Outlook Inquiry among local hotels con- firmed the reported change spending habits among visitors this year. The tendency to shop for satisfactory accommodation is quité marked, and hostelries charging: moderate rates are at- tracting a considerable volume of business away from the more pre- tentious stopping places. GRAIN FOR HUDSON BAY TEST SECURED Saskatchewan to Supply the Entire Shipment of 750,000 Bushels Regina, Sask., July 26.--Ac- cepting the challenge of the Do- minjon Government, Saskatche- wan will supply the entire ship- ment of 750,000 bushels of wheat for the first official test of the new Hudson Bay route. The senior wheat producing province of the Dominion has the grain and places the responsibility of providing the boats on the Fed- eral Government. These arrangements have been completed by Hon. J. A. Merkley, Minister of Railways, Labor and Industries, who sald he had re- ceived positive assurance of the amount of grain needed for the test shipment, Recently," sald Mr. Merkley, "1 received a telegram from Hon. R. J. Manion, Minister of Rail- ways of the Federal Government, putting the proposition squarely up to us. I got busy on the phone and by wire. By night I had as- surance that Saskatchewan wouid supply the entire 760,000 bushals for the test and we are going ahead with the preparations." The minister has now wired Ottawa asking that the Dominion Government take full responsi- hility for the marine insurance on this ghipment and provide the Logte, three in number, Mr. where he had located the grain but it is understood that by ar. | rangement with Saskatchewan erain men and the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool the entire shipment is to he provided from this prov- ince. The accused pleaded not guilty and was released on bail of $500 pending their en~ quete, set for July 30. Irene Renaud, 1263 City Hall avenue and Arthur Viau, the complainants, told the court that they fell violently ill after com- suming several draughts of li- quor served them by the accused at a picnic on the afternoon of July 17 last. The picnic was held at Ile Vincent. Pelletier and hig wife admit serving liquor to the accused, but added, in their version of the af- fair given to the court, that the liquor was of the very best qual- ity. They do not know the com- plainants, they sald, and if the latter suffered any iI effects af- ter being "treated" it was not due to the liquor because Pelle- tier in serving the complainants | simultaneously drank from the : seme bottle.
