He finished up a splendid evening's work by hitting a home run in the last inning. The local boys got off to a great start by scoring six runs in the first inning, and won the game right there. Saturday's Soccer Oshawa's soccer teams had a mixed fate on Saturday. The Nationals played a splendid game to defeat the Earlscourt Corinthians by a score of 1 to 0, while the City team, playing in Toronto, lost a valuable point, when they battled to a three-all draw with the Sons of Ireland, * * * - Cricketers Swamped ' One of the surprises of the cricket season was sprung on Saturday, when the Oshawa Club was defeated. by the .C 3. Gas team of Toronto, by a margin. of ten wickets. The locals' score of 27 was their lowest of the season, and their opponents had little difficulty in knocking off the necessary runs to win, How SWIM Martha Norelius Wright AIDS TO CORRECT BREATHING In our last lesson we saw that breathing is exactly the opposite of land breathing, when the face is submerged as in the crawl, the over- arm side or the trudgen stroke. Exhale through the nose and inhale throtigh the mouth. 1 particularly stress this because it is a fundamental error in most swimmers who have not had the advantages of proper coaching. If the breath is exhaled through the mouth the swimmer is bothered by the bubbles which sweep out over the face, and moreover the possibility of taking water into the mouth when the head is raised sideways for the inhale is decidely greater. Correct breathing alone will give you distance in swimming. The strongest man in the world will not get far in the above strokes unless this Sint is firmly grasped. ' f course the easiest way to develop "wind" is by Swinuning. Never- theless for the beginner there are certain exercises which can be made a part of the day's practice and which may be used even before the strokes are. learned, so that when the strokes are mastered the art of pro breathing has been acquired, From your first few attempts at swimming then, do the following exercise. Stand in the water at a point where the surface reaches slightly above the waist, take a deep breath through the mouth, bend the knees until the head is under the water and exhale slowly through the nose' until all the air in the lungs has been ex- hausted. Then stand once more, breathing in through the mouth and continue with the exercise, extending the number of times this is done cach day until it becomes as easy to breathe this way as to breathe in the ordinary way while on land. Thus by the, time the elementary strokes are mastered and. it be- comes necessary to submerge the head during the full stroke correct jreathing will come as a matter of course. Owing to the visitors being late in arriv- ing, two halves of 35 minutes each were played, The visitors lookea dangerous in the opening minutes, but were unable to penetrate the Oshawa defence. Grant ploughed through to the other end, and gave Douglas a scoring chance, but he was too slow, and McInnes cleared. A nice chance came to the yisitors when Wee Benny was injured, leav- ing the Nats. with ten men. Boyd was also knocked out, but recovered and stayed in the game, Half time found the score sheet a blank, this being a fair result on the play. Both teams played careful foot- ball to open the second half, the defences having the better of the exchanges. A nice chance for the visitors was lost when their cen- tre forward hit the crossbar with a fast shot, On a foul close in, near the Earlscourt goal, Banks gave Douglas a nice pass, and that play- er banged the ball hard and true into the net for the only goal of the game, Nationals were given a score when a penalty kick was given againct them, but the visitors' back shot past the post with the spot kick. The game ended with Mur- oby cutting in on the local goal, and with the locals victors, although a draw would have been a good re- sult for both teams, The draw for the radio set was made at half time, by Mike Bouck- ley.
