Dated at Hamilton this fourth day of August, 1931, } i (37, 41, 43) and SINCLAIR'S LETTER TO SENATOR HARDY I ------ 'Oshawa, Ont., Aug. 11, 1931. "Hon. A. C. Hardy, "Brockville, Ont. Dear Sir: You seem to take ex- ception to 'continuous screeds' ise sued by me during recent weeks, which I may say are statements of my opinion as a member of the Legislature, on public matters. This time I propose to write you first, and hand the letter to the press. "I have always underst that a member of the Ontario Legislature, when elected, represented not only his own riding, But also the whole Province, and therefore, had a right to discuss matters of public interest to the Province. This is all that 1 have done, and I hope to continue to do so. If my views are right, it will create a public opinion, If they are wrong, | alone suffer. Just why my discussion of Hydro affairs and the Beauharnois scandal should $O arouse your ire as to cause you to make such an unjust attack upon me, I am at a loss to know. If you attacked my views, I could under. stand, but when you take my state- ment, appearing in the press on Aug. 7, and devote your whole effort against me personally, with- out even discussing the issues raised by me, it seems to me the public must be wondering why you have done so. Alleged Lack of Energy "Your complaint about my.lack of energy for seven and a half years. while acting as Leader, comes rather late. It was never communi- cated to me during my leadership. I could not get you to call a con- vention during all that time; until after the Federal party defeat. | ask you when, daring the whole seven and a half years, did you complain to me about my lack of energy. If you will look up your files, you will see that the morn- ing after the last Provincial elec- tion, you wrdte me, congratulatin me for the fight I had put up, pi particularly during the last two weeks of the campaign. Two days later, you wrote fr Harry John- son, Secretar of the Liberal Association, and sent me a copy of your letter, in which you said you trusted our people would be most careful not to criticize me, that | did good work, and was not to be blamed for the debacle. So it would appear after the close of the 1929 election that you did not blame me for 'any lack of energy. Since that time, either at tle - convention or elsewhere, I hay® no record that you held the views you expressed in The Globe in your statement on Aug. 8 Tt must be something re- cent which has affected your views and has caused you to attack me in the way in which you have done. "Your reference to my desire for revenge against the Liberal conven- tion is ill-advised. You say 1 was repudiated and rejected by the can- vention, As I recall it, I declined to be a candidate. Your charge that | have lost no opportunity in attack- ing the Ontario Liberal Association since that time is unfounded. I led the Liberals in the House during the last session, following that con- vention, and have received warm praise from Liberals ever since for my work there. Your charges fail entirely, both on the matter of lack of energy and in regard to hostility to the Liberal Association. "I have been of that school of Liberal thought which believes in public service for the sake of ser- vice. Public life has cost me a lot of time, energy and money. I was not serving for any reward I might get, financial or otherwise, but for the betterment of gublic life in On- I have not changed om Because of my views, whic are shared by the rank and file of the Liberal Party in this Province, I gave my statement to the press. The statement has received tavor- able editorial comment, I have re- ceived magy letters of commenda- tion. I stand by that statement in its entirety. It was not issued to embarrass any one, but to assist in Iding public opinion at a time when most needed, If, after twenty years of public life, I. am not cap- able of forming an opinion, it would be 'a strange thing. 1f the only reason why I cannot express views on public matters are those con- tained in your remarks in The Globe of Aug. 8, then I must sub- mit that I have the right to let the public know what I am thinking. "I have tried to figure out why you made the statement at all, and why you made such a statement as you did, and why it was made at the time it was made, but the state- ment itself does not give me any reason. I am therefore obliged to write you and ask you fér your reasons. And, while writing, I pro- pose to ask you one pertinent ques- tion which can be answered by yes or no, and the question is this: Have you at any time had any part in any manner, directly or in- directly, in any of the negotiations with any one leading fo or re- lating to the Beauharnois Order-in- neil passed by the laté Federal ernment, ang which was recent. tario. views. ly revoked and replaced by legis- lation by the present Government ? "I hope I have not trespassed too much on' your time bv writing this rather long letter, and that you will give your answer to the above ques- tion at an early date, and in as public a manner as you gave your recent statement. "Yours truly, "W. E. N. Sinclair." WHY SOILS WEAR OUT In many parts of the country one hears a lot about worns-out ferms, Soils do wear ous by con- tinual cropping, and here are some of the facts as supplied by Dr. F. T. S8hutt, M.A., D.8c., Do. minion Chemist, Department of Agriculture. A 25 bushel crop of wheat removes from the soil about 30 pounds of nitrogen, 12 pounds of phosphoric acid, and 7 pounds of potash in a yéar. A 200 bushel crop of potatoes re- moves about 42 pounds of nitro- gen, 18 pounds of phosphoric seid, and 60 pounds of potash. Taking an average of these two crop types the average crop re- moves 36 pounds of nitrogen, 15 pounds phosphoric acid, and 33 pounds of potash in a season. Ac- cording to %stimates of the total amount of plant food present io scils of good quality the ava'l- able supplies of these three basic food substances would, if not re- newed by some means, be com- pletely exhausted in 113 years for the nitrogen, 268 years for the phosphoric acid, and 227 years ler the potash. Only by the re. turn of plant foods can 3)il fer tility be maintained. A BIG BOOST FOR R.O.P. There-is probably no more out- standing authority on poultry 'work in Canada or on this conti. nent for that matter, than Pro- feesor W. R. Graham of the O.A. C. at Guelph, Addressing the R O.P. Breeders' Convention re- cently he stated "I know of no instance in the whole of my ex- perience in which the integrity of R.O.P. records was ever ques- tioned." Record of Performance for Poultry as operated under the direction o the Dominion Depart. ment of Agriculture, he stated was filling an important place in poultry breeding in Ontario and throughout Canada.
