"Wal, bishop," replied the wor- thy Bangs, 'you must remember this is a 'tough' town, and if you want a quiet religious meeting to-morrow don't say too much about the Ten Commandments." Burgess THE TWITCHTAILS LIVE HIGH To get the very best you can Is my advice to beast or man. --~Twitchtail the Ground-Squirrel. Twitchtail and his family live up to that belief. That is how it happened that Twitchtail had rade his home under the big stone were he had so easily escap- ed from Flip the Terrier. You see, that big atone was close lo a fleld of grain, and it wasn't far from an orchard. Moreover, that stone was in a field of alfalfa ond Twitchtail and his family are very fond of grain, fruit and ailt- alfa, in addition to many other things, including a variety of plants, insects and a little meat when they can get fit. Twitchtail had been born in a snug home on the slopes of a hill btcyond the orchard. When he and Mrs. Twitchtail started out into the Great World to make a home for themselves they had first wandered about exploring. It was Twitchtail who had discover. ed the big stone in the alfalfa field near a corner where the field of "wheat adjoining the glfalfa field and the orchard adjoined both. It was quite a distance from their former home on the hillside, and moreover, it was out in the open, whereas they had Kyesight Specialist Phone 8218 PREPARE FOR THE WORST ft. Mrs. Twitchtail had wanted to live on that hillside whare she had always lived. It bad been hard work for Twitehtail to induce her to try this place he had found. "My dear," sald he, "we can dig our home under this stone and it will be just as safe as any liome we could find on that hlilaide. And then think how we can live! Food is the most important thing next to safety, especially when the children come along. Here on our very doorstep is one of the things we like best (he iaeant -the alfalfa) and it is only a little way to that delicious whea® snd not much farther to get all the fruit we want. We never have lived ag well on that hillside as we will here. When that wheat ie ripe it will be no labor at all to fi'l our storerooms. There never was a better place for a Ground Sqnirrel home." He said so much that Mrs. Twitchtail, with many misgivings, at last consented and the home was made under the big stone. They. took a great deal of pains with it, and it containel a snug bedroom and several storerooms. Then they cut little paths through the alfalfa to the wheat field and over to the orchard, and as the alfalfa and the wheat grew they were quite as well hidden as ever they had been on the hillside. The big stone made a wonderful loo2k- out. Twitchtail spent a lot of time sitting on top of it when there was no work to be done, watching for the possible ap- rroach of enemies. "My dear," he would say, 'I can see so far in all dhiections tast no one can get near witnout being seen. We couldn't have a better place in which to ive." Mrs. Twitchtail finally came to feel the same way and confessed tLat she was glad he had insisted on making their home there. "lI knew you would be," de- clipred Twitctail. "I knew jou would be." Then the babies came along, ten of them, and Mrs. Twitchtail wae more glad than ever. It was a relief not to have to luave them long while they were helpless in order to get her own focd. She could run out and gel all she reeded within a few fect of the doorway. Then when they got big enough to go out themselves apd began to get their own food the fact that they could get it right close at hand saved a lot of worry. And because there was so much and such good food, the very best of food, these young Twitchtails grew fast and were strong and healthy. It was Anly when the alfalfa and the wheat were harvested that the Twitchtails doubted the wisdom of their choice of a home. Then they did have a few bad days and kept inside their home most of the time while the men and machines were harvesting the crops. When at last the harvest was over they felt very much exposed for awhile. But a new crop of alfalfa soon sprang up and grew rapidly, and it was very, sweet and tender. And over in the wheat field there was plent of grain left on the ground, an always there was the fruit in the orchard. So, altogether they were satisfied that they had made no mistake.
