TW HCHTAIL GETS Another's fault pass light'y o'er Lest they may even up the score. --Twitchtaib the Bquirrel Twitehtail the Ground Squirrel had been badly upset by the fright he had . received when "he had thought Mrs, Twitchtail had been killed and carried away by an auto mobile as she was crossing a motor highway, and he couldn't get over it As he followed her in quest of a new home he had a lot to say. "Why didn't you look before crossing the place?" he demanded. "It was just luck and nothing more that you were not killed by that monster. Even a youngster just starting out in the Great World would know enough to look this way and that way before crossing an open place like that. Certainly you are old enough to know bet- ter. You must be crazy." Mrs. Twitchtail said nothing. There was really nothing to say. She had been careless and she knew it, Had she looked she would have seen that automobile coming and would have waited. She had had even more ot a fright than had Twitchtail, for the car had passed right over her, but she didn't re- mind Twitchtail of this. She tried to pretend that she didn't hear him, but all the time she was having hard work to hold her temper. "I've heard you tell the children over and over again that the price of long life 1s everlasting watchful- ness, and that even when things scem safe there may be danger for those who are careless and fail to look and listen, Then you go do such a stupid, careless thing as this. Really, my dear, 1 thought better of you. I really did," continued Twitchtail. Mrs. Twitchtail swallowed the sharp retort on the tip. of her tongue, and it was hard to swallow. She said nothing, merely kept on her way. "I'll get even with him yet," she thought. "I know I was wrong, but that is no reason why he should keep rubbing the fact in, I'll get even with him yet" She was biding her time, as the saying is. She kncw that sooner or later Twitchtail would do some foolish thing and then it would be. her turn to say a few things, Her chance came sooner than she had dared hope it would. They had come to a rocky hillside. There were all sorts of holes and crevices among the rocks and Twitchtail be- rocks, but ran into first one and then another, in the most heedless manner. However, she said nothing but she, on her part, took care ney- er to enter a place until her nose told her that no one else had been there fately, She was taking no chances. Suddenly she heard a cry of fright above her and looking up saw Twitchtail pop out of a hole in the rocks, running as she seldom had secn him run before. His eyes look- ed as if they might pop right out of his Read. An instant later an- other head appeared at the opening and the heart of Mrs. Twitchtail seemed to flop right over as she saw it. It was the head of Shadow the Weasel. No wonder that Twiteh- tail was so frightened that he ran right into a tree so hard that he was knocked sprawling. In a flash he had rolled over and once more was racing for his life. Shadow the Weasel came no far- ther than the entrance. He grinned and then lazily yawned, He had came quite excited. "We'll never find a better place for a home!" he cried as he ran about exploring the various open- ings, Mrs, Twitchtail noticed that he wasn't stopping to smell at the en- trance. to each hole or crack in the been taking a nap when Twitchtail came blundering in, and because he had already dined heartily he was not hungry and so not inclined to give . chase, which was well for 'I'witehtail, When at last they were safely away from that place Mrs. Twitch- tail had her say. "Of all stupid things, you did the stupidest," said she, "You are old enough to know better than to go into any place without first making sure that no one is in there. You must be crazy, What is your nose for? Really, |" my dear, 1 thought better of you. 1 really did." Twitchtail 'opened his mouth to say something, but thought better of it. Mrs, witchtail was getting even with him and there wasn't really anything to say. He had been just as careless as she had been and he knew it. Ww. Burgess (Copyright, 1931, by T. W.
