Suitor (to rich man)--*T have the honor to ask. sir, for your daughter's hand." : "Which daughter," ro leave that entirely to you, sir." STUBTAIL KEEPS HIS APPETITE The world is never wholly black To one who keeps his appetite. ~Stubtail. Stubtail the Mountain Beaver was a prisoner, . Yes, sir, he was a pris- oner. There was no doubt about it. All unsuspecting, he had walked right into a trap that Farmer Brown's Boy had set for him, He never had had any experience with traps, for none had been set on that particular mountain slope where he always had lived. You see, Stub- tail's fur is of little value to man, so no one ever had bothered to try catch him. He had been a little suspicious of that queer wire thing, but it had seemed to be harmless and the food inside had been so tempting that he had hardly hesitat- cd at all about entering it, Then there had been a sharp snap and a wire door had closed. At the sound Stubtail had started back but had promptly bumped his nose against the wire door, He couldn't understand it at all. He could see out but he couldn't get out. He tried and tried. He used his sharp teeth on those wires which looked like thin sticks that it would be mere play to bite through, It was one of the greatest surprises of his whole life when he found that he couldn't bite them off and merely hurt his feeth. Then he became frantic and struggled until he was exhausted, Arter her first fright Mrs. Stub- tail timidly approached and she, too tried to bite through those hateful wires. Of course, it was useless, She remained close by all night, trying to comfort him, but with the coming of daylight, sadly she left him and sought the safety of home under ground. So she was not on hand when Farmer Brown's Boy ar- rived and triumphantly picked up the trap and Stubtail and carried them off to camp. Only when she peeped 'out later in the day to see if Stubtail was still there did she know that he had disappeared; how, she couldn't cven guess. So, while little Mrs. Stubtail mourned for him and was frighten- ed by the mystery of his disappear- ance and teared to put foot oufside, even when the blessed darkness came again. Stubtail was having the strangest adventure of his whois life, Naturaily he was very timid, but this does not mean that he was a coward No, indeed. Timid folk are stometimes the bravest-when jt comes to real courage, . Stubtail thought he had been 'fright- ened before, but all previous frights were as nothing compared with the fright he got when Farmer BroWn's Boy apeared. But frightened as he was he showed a brave front, "I won't let him know I am afraid. No, sir, I won't," he kept saviug to himself, and ground his teeth and growled and snapped at Farmer Brown's Boy and tried to look very fierce. He tried to make the latter afraid and in doing so hide his own fear, . "You plucky little rascal!" ex- claimed Farmer Brown's Boy as Stubtail tried to bite him. "I've been told that you are. one of the most timid animals in the mountains and here you are trying to make me believe that you are fierce and unafraid. Now, stop your growhng and biting, for you don't fool me a bit. I'm not going to hurt you, and by and by I'll take you back home and let you go again. I just want lto get acquainted, How about a bite to eat?' Of course, Stubtail didn't under- stand a word of this, but he did understand the meaning of food when he saw it and there wasn't the least thing in the world the matter with his appetite. "It is hard to fight on an empty stomach," thought Stubtail. "Food means strength. My, that looks good, It is bad enough to be scared but to be scared and hungry too is worse.' Without any hesitation he reach- ed out and took what Farmer Brown's Boy offered him and two minutes later was eating as freely and with as much' enjoyment as if he weve back home with Mrs. Stub- tai (Copyright, . W. Burgess) The next story: "Stubtail's Change of Mind." 1931, 1 NOVELTIES IN STAGE LIGHTING IN LONDON London, Sept, 12. -- Novelties in stage lighting have been in- troduced at the Alhambra Theatre by Hassard Short, well- known producer, who at present is putting on "Waltzes from Vienna' as the Alhambra attrac- tion, and a recent demonstration was given to newspaper men. A writer in The Observer thus de- scribes the new lighting: "Hitherto," sald Mr. Short, "the custom has been to utilize the stage itself for the concentra- tion of lights, but I depend more on the auditorium. In addition to having the footlights trans- ferred to the front of the eircle, I have about 36 spot lights con- cealed at different parts of the auditorium. These hidden spots can he operated singly or jointly so that the precise degree of light necessary to soften or ac- centuate any action on the stage can be assured, The audience cannot see these spot lights, as they are counteracted by bridge lights and telescopic lamps.
