Lest they bode ill instead of good. ~--0ld Mother Nature. Stubtail the Moutain Beaver had been much disturbed when he had discovered Farmer Brown's Boy sitting near one of the holes, and had retired very ich upset, for he is a timid lit- tle fellow and very bashful. It was the first time he had been out in daylight for a long time and he wouldn't have gone this time bad it not been such a dark day. By the time night came he was quite over his scare and he and Mrs, Stubtail were out early, for they had much work to do. To begin with, they made some calls on friends living near. Of course, Stubtail had to tell them all about his fright that day and he congratulated on his escape from that two-legged creature whe, as you and I know, he really had no reason to fear at all. It often is that way all through life, we do not fear that of which we should be afraid, and we do fear thot which is harmless. So it was auite late when he and Mrs. Stup- ta)! actually got to work cutting plents which they intended to store away for future use, "What was that?" exclaimed Stubtail suddenly as he estopped ! work and sat up in order that he might see better. "What was what?' demanded Mrs. Stubtail somewhat cross!y for she had geen nothing and she aidn't lke being interrupted ju | ker work. | "I paw a strange light ove) tnere. It was just a flash, but it | wis different from any light 1 ever have seen," replied Stuprail. Mrs. Stubtail sat up lonz enough for a good look ail arcund, It was very dark, so of course, she couldn't see far, but to see a light one wouldn't have to see far. For a couple ut min utes they sat there. Then Mrs Stubtail went back to work. "Don't ba foolish," said she '"I'here are no stars and no moon tomight, so, of course, there can- not be any light. You are nervous, It is just nerves. That is what i' 18-~nerves. You haven't recovered from the scare you had when you were so foolish as to go out In daylight. Don't be silly." "I'm not silly, and I did see a light," retorted Stubtajl indig- nantly. Nevertheless, he resumed werk, although he stopped be- tween every few bites to look abont, "There it is again!" he ex Jie was still uneasy, but growing { sometimes merely flashing, After {out from a solid wall of blackness. "It is moving this way!" ex- claimed Stubtail., backing toware the nearest entrance to one of their tunnels, Mrs, Stubtail simply sat right where she was, She wasn't afraid. She was fascinated by that strange light moving this way and that, flashing for an instant ard then disappearing. All the time it was drawing nearer. It wae the strangest thing she ever had known, and instead of fear 1 great curiosity took possession f her.
